THE STATE OF PARÁ
The state of Pará is situated in the
region north of Brazil, in a privileged geographic position that allows easy
access to the main consuming markets, national and international.
The state of Pará has an area of 1.253.164 km² where lives population of
5.800.000 inhabitants, distributed in 143 cities. Belém, the capital, has
about 1.200.000 inhabitants, in an area of 718 km². Besides of being the
second biggest state of Brazil in extension – lesser only that the State of
Amazonas – is one of the states richest in resources of Brazil. Situated in
the Brazillian Amazonian Region, the state of Pará possesss a part of the
Amazonian Forest (that it exceeds the Brazillian limits), fertile lands, rich
subsoil in minerals and immense rivers satiated of fishes, being that many of
the Pará rivers also present potential for construction of hydroelectrics.
In the state of Pará is localized most of the mineral province of Carajás,
considered richest of the world, with an area of 78 million hectares, and iron
deposits (18 billion tons), bauxite (2,4 billion tons), copper (1,2 billion
tons), manganese (60 million tons), nickel (47 million tons) and tin (37
thousand tons), as well as gold and other metals.
About not-metallic minerals, it also has accurrences, economically viable, of
calcareous rock, kaolin, plaster, rock salt among other. Beyond the Company
Valley of the Candy River (CVRD) and of some national companies, foreign
groups as the River Tinto Zinc, Rhodia, Inco co. Metal, Shell, Alcoa and
British Petroleum among other are part of the Program Great Carajás, that also
is come back towards the farming potentialities of the region.
The main economic activity of the State is the mining industry, afterwards the
industry of wood, the industry of foods, agriculture, the fishery and the
cattle breeding. With the objective to integrate the Amazonian Region and
Pará, that of it part is, to the development of Brazil, the Government
constructed horizontal highway of penetration (Highway Transamazônica) and
transversal (Highways Belém-Brasília and Cuiabá-Santarém) that will make with
that may be pushed the economic frontier of the portions southeast and south
of the Brazil for the Amazonian Region, growing on inside in large-scale
continental.

BELÉM, THE CAPITAL OF PARÁ
Belém bore in the edges of the Bay of
Guajará, in 1616, and its cradle was the Fort of the Presepe, in the quarter
of the Old City. Next at the Fort of the Presepe was created the Fair of
Ver-o-Peso. The name deriving of one practice introduced in Brazil in the
colonial period. It is that, at first, the place of the fair was used for
verification of the weight of the negotiated merchandises. One balances and a
public officer mediated the commercial transactions of that time.
For its colours, highly significant, mixture of dock and popular market,
the Ver-o-Peso constitutes one of the aspects most characteristic of the port
and the city of Belém.
With almost four centuries of existence, Belém is the city that more grew in
the region being considered the regional metropolis of the North and city most
populous of the Amazonian Region.

businesses of the Amazonian Region. Belém has population of 1,2 million of
