ABIURANA=Pouteria spp.
Also known as ABIU

The Abiu tree has 18 to 23 meters of heigh, and it grows at Amazon region.  This wood  is used  for  furniture,   general  construction, flooring, framework, veneers and so on.  Light Hue, fine texture. Density: 910 kg/m³ (heavy). Low resistant to fungus.  Easy to treat.

ANDIROBA = Carapa guianensis Aubl.
Also known as  ECHO MAHOGANY.

A Medium density  lumber, kiln-dries  very rapidly. This  wood is  appropriate for internal  finishing, in general construction, as for baseboards, molding, doors, jambs,  wainscot, decorative carved laminates and  furniture.  It is also used for various posts, and supports, and for fences and gateposts. This wood easy to work with and has an excellent finish when planed,  turned  or  bored. "Resistant  to  dry-wood termites and moderately resistant to marine borers".

ANGELIM PEDRA=Hymenolobium spp.

General uses. Civil construction, heavy external, flooring, window frames, doors, sleepers, furniture, tool handles, veneers and plywoods, prefabricated homes, truck flooring, garden furniture, playground equipment.  Railway sleepers are available in international standard sizes untreated.  This wood is easy to work with and has an excellent finish when planed, turned or  bored. "Resistant to dry-wood termites and moderately resistant to marine borers".

ANGELIM VERMELHO= Dinizia excelsa

Hard and heavy wood. Medium texture and up. Surface slick to touch and without brightness. It is recommended for external construction:
as cross- ties, gate and fence posts, connecting rods, bridges and marine piers.  Also used for truck platforms.

ARARACANGA= Aspidosperma spp.
Also known as Piquia Marfim

Heartwood bright orange red to reddish brown when freshly cut becoming light pinkish brown or pale yellowish brown upon exposure and drying. Sapwood narrow, white to yellowish, becoming darker on exposure and then not clearly differentiated from the heartwood. Grain straight to irregular; texture medium, uniform; without pronounced odor or taste when dry.
The wood is reported to machine well and rates fair to excellent in all operations; finishes smoothly and takes a high polish. Heartwood is rated very durable in its resistance to both white-rot and brown-rot fungi. However, field trials indicate only moderate durability. Heartwood is reported to absorb over 6 pcf of preservative oils using either a hot and cold bath treatment or a pressure-vacuum system; penetration was deep and uniform (test specimens were 20 in. long and not end coated).

Uses: Interior work, paneling, furniture, flooring, turnery, heavy construction, railway crossties, and boat framing. Vehicle’s flooring, ship building (planking and decking), sleepers, industrial or heavy flooring, heavy carpentry, bridges (parts in contacts with water or ground) and posts.  Suitable for garden furniture and outdoor buildings.  A good substitute for Yellow Balu.

BLOODWOOD= Brosimum paraense Hub.

Deep red or pale reddish brown. Highly resistant to rot and boring insects. 
Although hard and tough, it works easily with hand and power tools. May need pre-drilling for nailing. Holds screws well. Glues, stains and polishes to a very good finish. Durable and very resistent to preservative treatment. Dries slowly without much degredation. Small movement.

Uses. Fine furniture, Cabinets, Flooring, Musical instruments, Decorative paneling, Door and Window moldings, marquetry work, fancy boxes, turning, veneers.

CABREUVA = Myroxylon balsamum
Also called SANTOS MAHOGANY.

Medium to dark brown.  A superior choice to genuine mahogany.  Highly stable.
Uses. Superior flooring, cabinets, turnings, construction civil and marine and bridges.

CAIXETA / CAXETA = Simarouba Amara

Light wood.   May be air-dried if lumber is kept stacked and covered.   Very fast kiln-dry.  Easy to  work   with  manual  and  mechanical  tools. Excellent  for sanding, drilling.   Long lasting when used dry. Caixeta has excellent nailing, gluing, and finishing properties.
Caixeta wood, because it is light and of medium mechanical properties, can be used for ceiling boards, packaging and light box manufacturing, shoe heels, coffins, toys, matchsticks, veneers, plywood, frames, musical instruments, interior  work, door and window moldings, broom  handles, plywood, laminates. Even used for wooden clogs manufacturing. Used to make: Furniture (Chairs, Chests, Desks, Tables, Cabinets, Dining and Bedroom sets), Moldings, Drawer Sides, Dowels, Interior Millwork, Picture Frames, Blind Slats.

CAMBARA (Cedrinho)= Erisma uncinatum
Also known as QUARUBARANA

Light wood, air dries easily and kiln-dries rapidly. It is used for general and naval construction, boats, carpentry and interior work. Also used for producing furniture, veneer, plywood, railroad cars, truck platforms, spiral staircases, boxes and crates. It is easy to saw, plan, nail and screw. When treated with steam, solid pieces can be curved or bent. "Moderately resistant to fungus and insects".

CANELA / CANELAO =Nectandra spp. or Ocotea spp.
Also known as Louro-canela

Uses: Cabinetry, garden furniture, furniture, interior furniture components, stairs, flooring and outdoor buildings. Doors frames and windows frames and moldings.

CEDAR=Cedrela odorata
Also known as CEDRO

An aromatic Cedar. Light to moderate heavy wood, cuts well, long life in dry climates.  Easy and fast kiln-dry.  It is used for fine furniture production; for general and naval and airplanes construction;  musical instruments, small boxes and pencils; sculpturing and wood handcrafting, modeling, molding, boarding, planking and flooring. Easy to work with manual and mechanical tools. It has excellent absorption of pigments and can be well polished.

CEDROARANA=Cedrelinga catenaeformis
A large tree 100 to 160 ft tall with a trunk diameter of 5 to 9 ft.   Heartwood pale brown with a golden luster; prominently marked with dark red vessel lines; merging gradually into the lighter colored sapwood. Texture coarse; roe grained; odor and taste absent in dry specimens, but fresh-cut timber is reported to emit a disagreeable scent when worked. Compression failures are a common defect.  Saws woolly but is easy to cut; can be finished smoothly.  Reported to be probably fairly durable; also reported to have good weathering resistance.  

Uses: General construction, furniture components.

CUMARU=Dipteryx Odorata

This is a heavy  wood, ready for  use  after either  slow  air-drying and/or a  fast kiln-dry.  It is used for  general  construction such  beams, rafters, studs,  battens,  door jambs, wainscot.  It is an excellent flooring wood. Also used externally as well for posts, pillars, gatepost, connecting beams and long lasting cross-ties.  It is used for truck platform, railroad cars, naval and furniture construction, lathe turned  poles  and  tool handles. Resistant to fungus, marine  borers and insects.

CUPIUBA= Goupia glabra Aubl.

Heartwood light reddish brown, darkening superficially upon exposure; distinct but not sharply demarcated from thick brownish or pinkish sapwood Luster medium to rather high; texture medium to coarse; grain straight to interlocked; odor is fetid when fresh but dissipates upon drying though still apparent.  Middle density wood. Very fast kiln-dried.  Easy to sand, lathe turn and drill.  It is used for external construction such as posts,  pillars, fence posts,  bridge  beams,  cross-ties  and connecting rods.  For general construction as beams, rafters,  battens, parquet blocks  and planks for flooring,  door  and  window jambs. Heavy civil construction, Railway sleepers.  For the production of furniture, tools handles, decorative covering  and  lathe turned pieces. Good resistance to attack by both brown and white-rot fungi. 
Resistant to dry-wood termite attack but has little resistance to marine borers. Highly resistant to fungus and termites, good resistance to dry wood insects.

CURUPAI= Anadenanthera macrocarpa

Logs: length to 6m, average diameter: 40 cm.
Timber with fine and uniform texture; grain usually irregular and interlocked.  Heartwood of reddish brown with dark streaks. Colour and grain can be compared to Rosewood.
Dries slowly with some tendency to warp. The timber is difficult to work because of its hardness and causes severe blunting effects on cutting edges. Like other Brazilian’s hardwoods Curupai is extremely resistant to preservative treatments, but rated as very durable in contact with earth and water.

Uses: Heavy exterior construction and marine work, flooring, railroad crossties, tool handles, and turnery.

CURUPIXA=  Micropholis spp. 
Also known as President Mahogany (Trade Mark)

Member of the mahogany family. Looks like mahogany but harder, sands and finishes well.
Uses. Heavy construction, Light construction, Turnery, flooring, Paneling, Interior trim, Billiard tables.

EUCALIPTUS grandis

Grain. Straight
Colour of sapwood. Pink to yellow and greyish brown.
Colour of heartwood. Pink to dark red after exposure reddish brown.
Texture. Fairly even, open, slightly to moderate coarse.

Uses. Doors, flooring, indoor and outdoor furniture,panelling, pallets, packaging, veneer, plywood, heavy external construction, light internal construction.

FAVEIRA= Parkia multijuga Benth
Also known as PARICARANA or Parica

Light Commercial Hardwood.
Colour : Cream to light reddish brown on exposure.

Uses:Excellent comercial timber for interior construction, moldings,
furniture manufacture, packaging, plywoods.

GARAPA – GRAPIA = Apuleia leiocarpa 
Also known as BRAZILIAN ASH

General uses. Civil construction, flooring, furniture, veneers and plywood, house framing. Railroad cars, truck platforms, spiral staircases, boxes and crates. It is easy to saw, plan, nail and screw.

GOIABAO=Planchonella pachycarpa

GUAJARA Rosadinho= Pouteria spp.
Also known as Amazon’s Cherry

The Guajara tree has 18 to 23 meters of heigh, and it grows at Amazon region.
Color: Light pink similar to the jatoba (Himenaea courbaril) when dried. 

Uses: Furniture,   general  construction, flooring, framework, veneers and so on.  Light Hue, fine texture. Density: 910 kg/m³ (heavy). Low resistant to fungus.  Easy to treat.

Guariuba=Clarisia racemosa 
Also known as Oiticica

Heartwood bright yellow, becoming brown or russet, but retaining a golden luster upon exposure; sharply defined from the thin white sapwood. Texture medium to coarse; grain variable, often decidedly roey with attractive figure;  dry specimens without distinctive odor or taste.  Air-dries rapidly.  Reported to have good stability when manufactured.   Easy to work and is rated fair to good in all machining operations. Cross-grained material requires sharp tools to produce a smooth surface fresh wood saws woolly. Tentative field trials indicate heartwood to be durable and resistant to termite attack. Elsewhere the wood is rated not very durable in ground contact.  Heartwood not responsive to treatment by pressure-vacuum systems or by open tank. Sapwood treatable if incised.
Uses: General and civil construction, flooring, and furniture components. Plywoods, box, crates, molding, windows  and doors frames, veneers, decorative paneling, cabinets, fine furniture.

IPE=Tabebuia spp.

Hard  and heavy  wood, easy air drying, easy and quick  kiln-drying. There is good reason why IPE is the  choice throughout the  world for  decks, walkways,  floors, pilings  and piers  which  are  exposed  to  the  weather (including the Atlantic City Boardwalk ) and which get heavy  use. It is a hardwood  that is incredibly durable and  attractive. It is used for general and naval construction such as rafters, beams and battens.  It is used for furniture, musical instruments, handles  for tools, knives  and  brushes.  It is also used for billiard cues, pillars and beams, cross-ties, posts, truck platforms and crates.  It is recommended  that  it be drilled prior to nailing or screwing.  Good  finishing  wood.Highly resistant to fungus and termites.

ITAUBA= Mezilaurus itauba ( Meissn ) Taub.

Colour. Yellow chestnut.
General uses. Decks, flooring, heavy civil construction, marine keels, veneers, and plywoods.

JATOBA = Hymenaea courbaril
Also known as BRAZILIAN’s CHERRY

Jatoba a beautiful, hard and heavy wood, fast air and kiln- drying. A premier wood used  worldwide for elegant flooring and  parquet  blocks. It is used for general  and  naval  construction, fine furniture, sporting goods, lathe  turned  frames and other wood pieces and trim.  Because of its beauty, it is also used for musical instruments, decorative paneling, door and window  moldings, jambs. Because of its durability it is used for tool  handles,  for  external use as cross-ties, posts, gateposts and bridge construction.  Easily painted, varnished and polished.  Easily sanded, lathe-turned and  drilled. Highly  resistant  to fungus and termites.

LACEWOOD = Roupala Montana Aublet.
Also called LOURO FAIA

Used as cabinetry, garden furniture, furniture,
interior furniture components, stairs, flooring.
Colour : Very close to cedar. Sold as substitute.

MACACAUBA=Platymiscium spp.

Harwood  described as reddish brown to light brown or brown-pink, with irregularly spaced blackish brown streaks.  Easy to work, this wood can be polished and finishing very easily.  It is very used in furniture, flooring, billiard cues, carpentry and musical instruments.

MACARANDUBA / MASSARANDUBA =Manilkara spp.
Also known as BRAZILIAN'S JARRAH

Hard and heavy wood, slow kiln drying.  Easy to saw, laminate, lathe turn, glue and  drill.  It is   recommended  for  external  construction  as cross - ties, gate  and  fence posts,  connecting rods,  bridges  and marine  piers.  Also  used for truck   platforms.  This beautiful hardwood is excellent for door and window moldings, parquet blocks and planks for flooring, decorative carved laminates, internal finishing.  It is used or furniture, musical instrument and toy manufacturing.  Reasonably resistant to fungus and termites attacks and very resistant to humidity.

MANDIOQUEIRA= Qualea spp
Also known in Brazil as Quaruba / Quarubarana

General Characteristics: Heartwood pinkish brown to reddish brown, occasionally olive brown; sometimes sharply demarcated from the grayish or yellowish sapwood. Luster golden in some species, medium in others; texture medium to decidedly coarse; grain straight to interlocked; without distinctive odor or taste.

Durability: Heartwood somewhat variable in decay resistance, generally is rated as moderately durable and is not suitable for continuously damp conditions. Also prone to staining during drying. Weathering characteristics are rated as only fair and severe surface checking develops when unpainted wood is exposed. Qualea albiflora is rated as moderately resistant to dry-wood termites.

Uses: Joinery, millwork, furniture, veneer and plywood, general construction, and flooring.

MARUPÁ=Simarouba Amara

Uses: Marine, heavy civil construction, doors, dowels, posts, retaining walls, sleepers, stables, sound barrier. Suitable for garden furniture and outdoor buildings and decking.  Especially suitable where hardness and high wear resistance are needed.  Railway sleepers available in international standard sizes.  Density.1000 Kg/M3

PEQUIARANA / PIQUIARANA = Caryocar glabrum Aublet  Also called AMAZON BLOND

Light white to yellowish beige tone.

PRACUUBA= Mora paraensis Ducke

               Pracuuba heartwood varies from chocolate-brown to reddish brown. Sapwood wide with yellowish to pale brown color. Grain straight often interlocked and somewhat wavy or irregular. Texture coarse. A very heavy, very hard wood; weight generally between 900 and 1100 kg/ Cu.M. (56-68 lb/ cu.ft.) seasoned. Large movement; dries slowly with appreciable degrade. Outstanding strength properties, particularly resistant to wear.   Difficult to saw, because of its density and interlocked grain. With the same qualification it can be planed, finishes smoothly, turns easily, splits with great difficulty.
Difficult to nail but holds nails and rail spikes well. Pre-boring is necessary.
Finishing: Staining and polishing satisfactory. 
Best suited for heavy construction work, jetties and foreshore work. Particularly suitable for sleepers, wagon bottoms and for both traditional and mosaic flooring.

PURPLEHEART= Peltogyne catingae Ducke  - spp
Also called Roxinho

Similar to rosewood but lighter in colour and more heavily marked in a violet shade.  Termites class D. Durable.
Uses: Cutlery, Fittings, Flooring, Interior & Exterior Construction, vats, marquetry, furniture, staircases, Marine, First Class Coffins.

SUCUPIRA PRETA= Diplotropis racemosa Amsh

Colour: Dark brown.
In the production zones this wood is appreciated for big building and naval structures, furniture (which however turns out very heavy) and flooring.  Civil constructions, internal & external.  In Italy it is this last use which prevails on the other.
General uses:  This wood is appropriate for in general construction, as for baseboards, flooring, doors, door frames, jambs, wainscot, decorative carved laminates and furniture. It is also used for various posts, stakes, and supports, and for fences and gateposts. Highly resistant beams, shakes, heavy exterior, highly durable window frames, industrial uses.  Bridge timbers, railway sleepers.  Density: 1210 Kg/M3.   Resistant to dry-wood termites and moderately resistant to marine borers".

TATAJUBA=Bagassa guianensis

Middle density wood; slow air-drying; if kiln dried there can be a slight tendency to bend.  Easy to work with manual and mechanical tools.  It is used for general and naval construction, as beams, rafters, battens, door and window jambs, baseboards,  parquet  blocks  and  planks  for flooring.  It is used for furniture, handles for tools, knives and brushes.  It is used as well for pillars, connecting rods, cross-ties, posts, gateposts,  crates  and  for  cellulose paste. Also used for finish carpentry and as decorative laminates. Resistant to fungus.

TIGERWOOD=Astronium lecointei
Also known as GONÇALO-ALVES

Gonçalo-Alves is  one  of  our  most  beautiful tropical woods.  It is tough, strong and durable.  It is typically a finely textured wood with a heartwood described as reddish brown  to  light golden brown, with  irregularly spaced blackish brown streaks.  Slow kiln drying recommended. Highly regarded for its durability.  This wood is far superior in strength to either Teak or Hard Maple. It is harder than Teak and does not mar or dent easily.  Very heavy with high density.  When  air-dried  to 12%  moisture  content, its bending strength is exceptionally high.  A premier wood with many uses, from general  construction requiring  strength  and  durability   to   the manufacture  of  fine  furniture,  cabinets and flooring. The wood can be polished and finished very easily. A clear finish enhances the beauty of this wood. Highly resistant to decay-causing organisms, dry wood insects and termites.
