3.0 de 5 estrelas Good mystery with unappealing characters 16 de março de 2015

This is a well-constructed and interesting mystery. Too bad about the characters...

Zoe Faust is (or was) an alchemist. She gave it up a long time ago (maybe centuries, she's been around for awhile) because of some associated tragedy. Now she's moving to Portland, Oregon to remake her life.

She meets several other characters...a living gargoyle, a police detective, and a 14 year old juvenile delinquent boy who, we keep being told, is 'a good kid' (usually, that is mentioned right after he does something that proves without doubt that he is NOT a good kid). OK, so the kid has a lousy mother. That's mitigation, I guess, for a juvenile police record that includes burglary and assault. Age 14. Yeah.

The gargoyle is cute. He's really the most interesting character in the book, and he has a problem that Zoe can help him with, if she agrees to do some alchemy again.

Zoe herself is a flat sort of character. She's overly evangelical about her vegan lifestyle, which is, apparently...healthy, easy, and delicious...assuming, of course, that you have the ability to change lead into gold to buy ingredients, and also assuming you have a live-in, classically trained French chef to do your cooking. Personally, I do my own cooking, on a fixed income, so I guess cheese and eggs will continue to be part of my diet. Oh, well.

Zoe's preaching about food gets in the way of the story a lot, I think. I mean, really, I get it. You live on veggies. Good for you. Can we get on with the story, please? Oh, and what the heck is wrong with coffee?

The kid, the preachy vegan...I dunno, they just kind of spoiled the story for me.

5.0 de 5 estrelas A completely enjoyable fast read 15 de julho de 2016

I don't know what book the negative reviewers read... I had a ball with this book! I enjoyed most of the characters (especially the gargoyle) and had a whole lot of fun with this new take on urban fantasy. Alchemy is a nice change from all the werewolf and vampire books out now. I got the Audible narration for a few bucks extra and liked the narrator, too. And hey, recipes included! I gave the green smoothie a try and it was really good.

I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. Please keep them coming!

5.0 de 5 estrelas a treasurey of history to fiction 26 de março de 2015

Wow! Lately I've been loving the gargoyle theme. They tie in so well with my own sculpture genre, threshold guardians. Hence, my attraction.
That being said, I love the the manipulation of history to fiction that takes place. In addition, the main three characters were so well developed! I felt their hopes, desperation and fears right along with them. Much like I did with, The Never Ending Story as a young teenager. I adore the setting, Oregon, The heart of the community, a homey tea shop and the dilapidated fixer upper. I look forward, to more masterful maturing of the characters relationships as some age and grow and increased trust continues to develop between them. I hope to read many more, stories with these Characters, from this writer in the near future. May her life be full of people, love and laughter. May her health and endurance increase. Oh and thanks for the recipes!

3.0 de 5 estrelas A fun, quick read. 7 de fevereiro de 2015

I love the concept, but I was disappointed with the execution. I felt the author set up an interesting mystery with the potential for something grand. As it went on; however, it devolved into a much simpler story that had me wondering if it really mattered that Zoe was an alchemist. While the historical information was interesting, very little alchemy happens in this book. As others mention, there is a lot of cooking. (There are even some recipes in the back.) Not necessarily a bad thing, as it's important to Dorian's character. Just not what I was expecting.

There are some issues with holding tension. I rarely felt any urgency or fear for the characters safety, except perhaps Dorian. Wondering what his fate would be is what kept me reading. For me, the characters were the saving grace. Most of them were distinct and interesting. I would love to see more of Zoe and company and see what other adventures come their way.

It was a fun, simple, quick read. I'm curious where the story will go and I would still give the next one a try.

3.0 de 5 estrelas Pedestrian, a bit annoying, I wish I'd bought it used 10 de janeiro de 2015

Beach read. There really isn't much here that is intriguing, the writing is workmanlike, but it doesn't transport you into another world. The characters are pretty clichéd, even the gargoyle.

And the vegan propaganda (beat me over the head with a stick for the whole book), incredibly tedious. I LOVE to cook... but the book doesn't wax lyrical about the vegan cooking, it preaches and bores.... wait, what is this review of a mystery doing talking about vegan cooking?.... that's my point exactly.

Having said all those snarky things, it still kept my interest, to the end. I finished it, and just felt like ... this Could have been so much Better.
