  • A fun, magical adventure with a strong moral undertone. Highly recommended. -The Wishing Shelf Awards
  • An Imaginative New Take on Trolls - Steve Alcorn, author of How To Fix Your Novel
  • Rushing streams, meadows, dark woods, crystal caves, and the earth's lullaby - Linda Bricco Schalk, The Press Project
Banished for the crime of having blue eyes, Gaven chooses to apprentice under the treacherous Azool, the Blue Fairy of Torv. Magic comes easily to Gaven yet it's never enough. In desperation, she offers up her firstborn trollkin to her fairy mistress in exchange for the final secret. Not that it matters. She's hideous. No one is foolish enough to bind himself to a blue-eyed trolless.

This quirky and humorous coming of age adventure is book one in the award winning Legends of the Aurora epic trilogy. The Legends of the Aurora fuses natural phenomena to a veil of magic, and guides you on an action packed adventure dripping with humor into a Norse landscape populated by reinvigorated trolls, dragons, and fairies.

Interview with the Author

Why a female lead? I'm certainly not the first to chose a female protagonist for my fantasy novel, but trolls are most often portrayed as male. I decided to explore the softer side of trolldom. Gaven's struggles will rip your heart out, but she finds her inner core of granite. I promise.

Many people think of fairies as sweet or at least benign, but you have taken an opposite approach. Why? I'm greatly influenced by the old stories. They're more realistic. If you've read, the Brothers Grimm in the original form, you'll know what I mean. Besides, somebody had to be the bad guy.

You add a lot of humor to the dangerous situations. Is that difficult? Not at all. I'm always thinking about my readers and when things get dark, I add a healthy dose of fun. Dragons, and more often trolls, are too frequently portrayed as angry creatures. I seek to redeem them.

Which character do you most identify with? Leaf. When I'm writing in her voice, I feel can the rough texture of the grass as she pulls her hands through the vegetation of the meadow, taste the sweetness of the plum as it flows over her tongue, and I chuckle at the bullfrogs croaking their love song  from the river.

Why an Epic Fantasy Adventure? I've always been able to anthropomorphize things. Besides, I find that Fantasy allows my elastic imagination to go places its never been before. It's so much fun.

What can you tell us about the other books in the Legends of the Aurora trilogy? Cairn: A Dragon Memoir finds Troika learning just how much he doesn't know as he travels back to the lair for a real lesson in what it means to be dragon. Garden of Betrayal sees Leaf all grown up, but still longing to restore Slug. She faces her greatest fears and prejudices when she meets Terra, Aurora's Elemental twin, but it's the fairies who reveal the stunning truth behind the bloodstone in the book series.

Sobre o Autor

Rebecca Ferrell Porter has always loved fairy tales, but she's also felt cheated by the one-sided vision of the classics. Are fairies really be kind and inherently good, while trolls are ignorant and devious by nature? What if the truth was more complex? It often is. And thus was born, Legends of the Aurora. A trilogy where the ancient myths of the Norse are blended seamlessly into modern discoveries to capture the spirit of a forgotten world. The adventure begins with Blue on the Horizon with Porter's unique trolls. Forget the slimy, evil creatures you remember, and step into a world populated by colorful creatures you will never forget. As a contributor to The Stoughton Press, Rebecca Ferrell Porter writes an ongoing serial about trolls living near a small Wisconsin town. She also blogs and shares her photography at: trolltails.blogspot.com Rebecca lives with two crazy mutts, a perplexed husband, and an overactive imagination.

I picked this book up because I was gifted a copy of the second book in the series (Cairn) and I didn't want to dive into the middle of the yarn being spun and feeling as if I was missing vital information. It did take longer than normal to finish, mainly due to my inlaws' extended visit, but that in no way was a reflection on the pacing of the book. In actuality the reverse was true. This was a nicely paced tale featuring: various clans of tiny Trolls (with varying phenotypes), Fairies (evil little buggers), Troll/Fairy hybrids (@$$ kicking oddities) and a shape shifting, precognative, magical catalyst of awesomeness Dragon (Stump) who was one of my favorite characters. There was however a slew of editing mistakes but the world building was good enough for my anal retentive mind to not get hung up on the errors. I also love the messages within the book. I was especially moved by the navigation of the Hot Topic of being accepted and appreciating oneself, even being loved and ultimately reveered, when you happen to be very different from the norm. This is definitely aimed for the Middle Grade demographic but I believe it to be a light, fun read for all ages. All in all Blue on the Horizon built a solid foundation for what I assume will continue to be an enjoyable, lighthearted, magical tale.

Being a huge fan of legends and tales of the nether world, I have read more than a few novels, some from first time authors, and I can't encourage you enough to read Blue. The story is well crafted, the characters rich, and the entire book threads a mystery character which "pops" in and out in one page chapters to swing you back to the mystical puzzle. Rebecca took a simple concept and birthed this first book, full of intriguing characters, action, love, betrayal, battle and validation. WOW... great work Becs! Can't wait til next year and the next journey. hugs, lbs

This story was very enjoyable to read. The adventures of Graven and Uredd as they travel to escape the blue fairy and to find out what their true destiny is. They have many adventures along the way and endure hardship and losses. They learn the life lessons that they need to survive when they end up far from where they started from. This story moved along at a fairly fast pace and there was always surprises lurking on the next page. I look forward to the next story where you hope the baby dragon finally gets his wings and flies!

Blue on the horizon - I really enjoyed this book. I read book 2 cairn: Dagon memoirs first and really found The story of dragons and trolls so enjoyable that I wanted more. I liked the relationships between the trolls and the dragons how they over came their fear and prejudices of each other. A well written story that keeps you reading and wanting more. The characters personalities keep you interesting finding out more about them. If you enjoy fantasy you will enjoy this book.
