Resenha da Amazon.com.br

In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened," she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever. Bonded to the aliens in ways no human has ever known, Lilith tries to fight them even as her own species comes to fear and loathe her. A stunning story of invasion and alien contact by one of science fiction's finest writers.

Descrição do produto

An alien race calls on one woman to revive mankind after Earth’s apocalypse in this science fiction classic from the award-winning author of Parable of the Sower.

Lilith Iyapo has just lost her husband and son when atomic fire consumes Earth—the last stage of the planet’s final war. Hundreds of years later Lilith awakes, deep in the hold of a massive alien spacecraft piloted by the Oankali—who arrived just in time to save humanity from extinction. They have kept Lilith and other survivors asleep for centuries, as they learned whatever they could about Earth. Now it is time for Lilith to lead them back to her home world, but life among the Oankali on the newly resettled planet will be nothing like it was before.

The Oankali survive by genetically merging with primitive civilizations—whether their new hosts like it or not. For the first time since the nuclear holocaust, Earth will be inhabited. Grass will grow, animals will run, and people will learn to survive the planet’s untamed wilderness. But their children will not be human. Not exactly.

Featuring strong and compelling characters and exploring complex themes of gender and species, Octavia E. Butler presents a powerful, postapocalyptic interplanetary epic, as well as a ray of hope for humanity.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

5.0 de 5 estrelas Surviving A Strange, New World 25 de janeiro de 2015

I have never read any Science Fiction books. Believe it or not, I have never watched Star Trek. I owe Octavia Butler a thank you. Because of Dawn I now have an interest in Fantasy and Science Fiction. From the very first sentences, Dawn by Octavia Butler is impossible to stop reading. As I read her novel, many themes entered my mind. The main character is Lilith. Lilith's life made me think of change and readjustment to new ideas, places and people, in this case th aliens known as Olinka. Lilith quickly becomes a portrayal of a strong woman. She is definitely a survivor.

Lilith never slides into self pity. Due to war, her husband and son are dead. She finds herself under the control of strange slimy creatures likened to slugs. After a deep sleep, she wakes up. She acquiesces to their learning process. Her old way of life must be forgotten. If Lilith is obedient to the wishes of the aliens, she will become the first leader on the new earth. Leadership on this future earth will give Lilith the ability to teach and train other captured earthlings.

However, change is never easy. Lilith will become the enemy of her own kind. Every day a choice must be made. Should she succumb to the thoughts of the rebellious earthlings or remain on course believing there is a chance to make something close to the planet where she once lived with family. If she kowtows to the rebellious earthlings, she will never see a revitalized Planet earth. Her decisions are difficult. I really felt sorry for Lilith when she had to fight off an overly sexed earthling. Starved for sexual intimacy, He falls upon Lilith like a giant rig out of control. He injures her body and mind. Still, Lilith does not give up.

Lilith is a Hebrew name. In Jewish Folklore, Lilith is thought of as the first wife of Adam. Octavia Butler's Lilith is a symbol of the Jewish Lilith. Butler's Lilith is the first human to experience the new order on earth. Like Adam/Eve, she is the first to experience a type of the Garden of Eden. This new earth, like the Garden of Eden, is a forest. A forest that needs to be tamed for the growth of food and also, for the growth of future families.

Science Fiction is entertaining and also meaningful literature. Science Fiction gives the reader the chance to think outside of the box about a new normal. Like Poetry, it jerks the mind. I am looking forward to traveling into another Science Fiction novel.

5.0 de 5 estrelas not only did it reignite my love of this genre 18 de agosto de 2016

Dawn is the second book I have read by Octavia Butler and is the first book of the Xenogenesis series. Years ago, I used to read SciFi regularly; but, for some reason had gotten away from it. Once I read Blood Child, not only did it reignite my love of this genre, it introduced me to Ms. Butler.

Dawn is brilliantly written. The story really explores some of the darkest things about humanity. A discussion of this book could take weeks because of the various topics it explores and those it only hints at. I loved that Ms. Butler choose the name of Lilith for the protagonist, such subtly and power in such a simple thing as a name. What little I know about Jewish myth is that Lilith was a female demon and she has appeared in ancient text as Adam’s wife.

In addition, the juxtaposition of Lilith and the Oankali was totally unexpected. I still have not decided if I like this or not. Yet, it did add to the complexity of the story and made it more compelling.

Whether you loved or hated it, this is a book you will not be able to put down. Just be prepared for something unexpected.

It's hard for me to rate this book, as I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand the concept was wonderfully original and effectively conveyed, on the other hand I found some of the characters' behavior implausible or simply confusing. The author provided a lot of detail to bring the setting and situation to life. On one hand this was good, as it painted a complete picture for the reader. On the other hand, the story dragged way too slowly. Overall, I'm glad I read this, as it is unique and thought provoking. I just don't think I'd ever want to read it again, or read any other books in the series.

The concept is very well thought out. It makes one think about mankind's destructive tendencies, and what if there is extraterrestrial life. The story kind of slowed in places, and the weird alien names were kind of annoying. I wasn't very impressed with the alien human neuron sex thing, something that I realize is part of the plot of the story, but it annoyed me, more than it seemed to have annoyed the main character. Not sure if I want to read the rest of the series.

I absolutely love Octavia Butler, and her personal story is as epic as her writing.

Ms. Butler's sci fi is always visceral and intelligent, and her ability to show human beings at our best, and our worst, is unparalleled. But she always goes deeper.

You don't have to know anything about her to love her writing, but once you experience even one of her books, you will want to know more. Her Wikipedia page will get you started, and leave you as breathless as her books. This is a woman who overcame so very much, just to be who she was.

As for this particular book, like everything she's written, it vexed me, moved me, held me spell-bound, and made me question what we believe about ourselves, and what it means to be human. It must be experienced to be appreciated. If you love sci fi, you probably already know her work. If you enjoy philosophical allegory, she weaves a spell that will make you long to spend an evening with her. (She is my "famous person to have dinner with," top pick -- if only!)

She has the gift of building a story, from moment to moment, that is intensely consuming, and any attempt to describe it would be a disservice. Her work must be experienced.

We lost Octavia Butler way too soon, and we will never see her like again. This MacArthur Fellowship Award winner's work is a gift to anyone who questions why we are the way we are -- and why we must do better. She excells at having had the imagination to put the possibilities into words.

There aren't enough stars! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
