‘I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. And I'm the man who's going to save your life.’

He's made a mark on almost every era of history, and he's touched millions of lives across space and time. In these pages you'll find just some of the stories behind those brief encounters, each of them addressing the question that must never, ever be answered: 'Doctor Who?'

This is the story of an impossible life – of a man who borrowed a spaceship, travelled through time and continually saved the universe - as told by the Doctor's friends, by his enemies, and by the man himself. Letters, journals, trial records, secret government files and the occasional bit of tabloid journalism reveal the never-before-told story of Gallifrey's last Time Lord.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Love the book but it is a bit difficult For new fans 25 de outubro de 2013

I bought this because of some very interesting quotes reprinted in my favorite website. It lived up to my expectations. It is chock full of quotes by people involved in making the show from the very beginning up to the 50th anniversary special -- but no spoilers, of course. And it is loaded with photos and other illustrations from every era of the show.

There is a chapter devoted to each Doctor. Chapters start with a section of text pieces written from the perspective of fictional characters in the show, each giving the reader a feeling for the journey that particular Doctor makes. The book sometimes mixes influences from different eras. The third Doctor's chapter has a long piece by the Brig and a tiny piece by the TARDIS, who calls the Doctor 'my beautiful thief'. In the fifth Doctor's chapter Tegan is interviewed by Dr Song. Each piece has its own style of presentation as well as point of view.

The point of view pieces are where the book could be a bit difficult for new fans. It starts easy enough with a memo from Madame Kovarian and then what is meant to be the Doctor's school report card signed by Borusa. Borusa is not a name new fans could be expected to know, but he can be looked up on the internet or in one of the encyclopedic books about Dr Who. After that some fictional text pieces are attributed or clear about who is meant to be writing them -- as when the writer of the next item calls the Doctor 'Grandfather'. A few are extremely difficult to attribute unless you are a superfan who has studied the length and breadth of Dr Who.

I would recommend this book to any fan of Dr Who. It is imaginative, lovingly designed, and informative.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the lack of clear attribution of all fictional text. Clearer attribution to the characters supposedly writing them would have made it easier for new fans to find out more about the characters and stories represented by the texts.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Wonderful Tribute to Doctor Who 24 de maio de 2015

This is a fun book to read and a must for any Doctor Who fan. Each doctor is featured, including Paul McGann. A narrator or two is assigned to each doctor to go over stories from the narrator's point of view. For instance, The Valeyard is the narrator for Colin Baker. The actor portraying the doctor has a section to tell his story and then producers and actors, writers, directors, and co-stars and guest stars associated w3ith that doctor have a section to talk about their doctor. It makes me want to go back and watch Doctor Who from beginning to end and increases my admiration for how absolutely special this series is!

It is touching to hear of the love and dedication people have for the Doctor, and the understanding of the Doctor's persona, as well as the knowledge that each actor imbues the Doctor with his own personality.

My only complaint about the book-- and it is slight-- is the occasional misspelled word or other typo. Other than those, this book is wonderful, with lots of pictures and inside stories-- it is a must for any Doctor Who fan!

Loved this book. It's a combination of various interviews with the Dr. Who people presented in little tidbit size, along with mock stories and letters from "The Doctors and his friends." The latter is really enjoyable and shows just how knowledgeable or anal some of the fans are. Probably for fans of Dr. Who only, but what fun.
