Descrição do produto

The EMP electromagnetic pulse attack and ensuing nuclear bomb exchanged happened four years ago, taking out the electric power grids and electronics of much of the world. Ninety percent of the world's population has perished, those surviving being from the underdeveloped countries not targeted by a nuclear exchange that followed.
Two years ago, at the unused Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada, a group of survivors had briefly ventured out of their underground refuge only to face a battle with hostile foreign survivors seeking to take their refuge. The jet stream returned the fallout of the nuclear winter back to the region, but not before both replenish the food and supplies needed to carry them through another siege by the nuclear fallout.
The survivors in the mountain have the past two years prepared to repel attacks on the mountain and to battle the Islamic jihadists arriving from Central America seeking to control Hoover Dam for an Islamic State in Arizona.
Now, the nuclear winter that blanketed the globe has reduced to storms influenced by the jet stream. The survivors split, most leaving the mountain to establish a refuge in the Veteran's Hospital in North Las Vegas from future storm events. A small group remains at the mountain to defend it.
A battle ensues at the Hoover Dam just ahead of global weather changes that deliver radioactive dust from an El Nino storm that forces the survivors to seek cover. Tragedy strikes with unimaginable consequences.

You might have noticed I left 5-star ratings for the first 2 books in this series, I don't know why they are not more popular, I found them some the most realistic in terms of possible EMP catastrophes. I have been eagerly awaiting book 3 to see what happens to the characters holed up in the mountain. I am not going to find this out however, not due to the quality of the writing, but rather to the quality of the proof-reading. I made it though 12% of this book and I have to give up. Not only is it full of spelling errors and poor grammar, but the layout is a mess in some places (one full line of words, next line with 2 words, one full line of words, next line with two words...for 20 pages) and I lost track of what was going on. There are sentences ending in mid-sentence which appear out of nowhere. There are repetitions, as if the author had two versions and both were published one after the other. The are timeline mistakes of things happening a few days earlier when in reality it was months or years earlier. A writing nightmare! Add this to the fact that it was 5.99, I generally don't spend more that 2-3 bucks per Kindle book but being as I liked the first two I could not resist. Now I regret it! I hope they sort out this literary mess as soon as possible!

2.0 de 5 estrelas Book #3 is a waste of time, this series bogged down in book #2 26 de outubro de 2015

Barnes' first book "Nuclear Winter" started off with a gripping and frighteningly realistic story of mankind's descent into a man-made hell. I am a retired military officer and can attest that the author knows his stuff... At least for one book. But throw in another two (and more planned?) books and it devolves into plots and subplots and subsubplots, some are reasonable but the majority require more suspension of disbelief than watching a Harry Potter movie. The third book is a study in finely-detailed dullness that left me feeling very dissatisfied. Read his first book, but then read something by another author.

5.0 de 5 estrelas What a terrific story! 27 de outubro de 2014

What a terrific story!!! Not only is it gripping and suspenseful, it could actually happen. It wouldn't take much for an electromagnetic pulse to occur, either naturally or man made, and take out our electical grid and disabling pretty much everything that uses electricity. Imagine the people running countries that have nuclear weapons using them out of fear or because they thought that another country was attacking them. It is all too realistic. It's a book that everyone should read.

The story is gripping and one can imagine what people would do if there was no electricity and nuclear fallout. It was hard to put the book down, it was that exciting. It was right up there with the other 2 EMP books. One of these days some smart Hollywood type is going to make a movie based on these books.
Look forward to seeing the movie.
