The original was more succinct, but so much has changed in the written English lexicon, that I do believe it's worth getting this book. Note, I also use and review the updated AP guidelines. This version of The Elements of Style is not always aligned with the AP guidelines, but it's a matter of style versus hardcore grammar.
Yes, Stephen King references the importance of The Elements of Style, but his referent predates this updated version, and so he obviously could not have meant this version edited by Richard De A'Morelli; however, I still recommend it. Either version, you won't be harmed.
Long story short, get it. If you can afford it, I think it's worth the money.
This so-called "CLASSIC EDITION 2018" is NOT what King was referring to in his quote, though the publisher of this version put King's words on the back of their book. What has happened here, is that the original work by William Strunk Jr. is no longer protected by copyright. So, a different publisher and a different editor (Richard De A'Morelli) used the original Strunk material and then added their material. Thus, while the book has the basic material by Strunk, it is in other respects, a different book. Were they clever or tricky in their enterprise? I leave that for the reader to ponder.
I started to try to compare and contrast the two books, but it would take too much time to do it justice. I would note that the "Elements of Style Classic Edition 2018" seems to be a sound book as well. Their counsel seems to me to be fine. I find, overall, that the original Strunk & White version is at once simpler, yet deeper, and is more elegant both to the eye and to the mind. The "Classic Edition" is going for a big and obvious presentation, and this may be better for some readers. But for those in university, and adults, I would recommend the Strunk & White 4th Edition.
An interesting additional question, which is beyond the scope of my note today, is whether such books are still vital in an era of Grammarly. My short answer is yes. Writing with elegance and clarity means one is also thinking or has thought with elegance and clarity - the two go together, like hat and head. But I would still use Grammarly at the end - one would be a fool not to, like going out in the rain with a hat - but not an umbrella!
