I have to admit, it took me a long time to finish this book. It was not because it is poorly written - on the contrary, the book is well researched and well written. The reason for the slow read was my own journey of first deprogramming my thoughts about this subject, and getting my mind to learn.
So, if you are a bit like me, and your mind really is in a "leader-centric" world, then let this book cause you to feel uncomfortable and make you think about followership.
I recommend this book to leaders, as well as those who are ok simply to follow. Let this book help you to be a great follower!
However, as Embracing Followership demonstrates, while we are not always in a position of leadership, we are almost always in some sense in a position of followership. Even CEOs of Fortune 500 companies have to give an account and ‘follow’ the demands and expectations of the shareholders and boards (I’m guessing everyone reading this review finds themselves further down the leadership totem-pole than a Fortune 500 CEO).
For the sake of our personal lives, our companies, our churches, our organizations, our cities, our nation, and our world, we need more and more people (a vast majority in fact) who are not only willing to embrace their role as followers, but to thrive in their role. This book helps lay down the tracks for each of us to understand and thrive as followers - since we are all followers on some level.
The book is divided into six parts. In these parts, author Allen Hamlin Jr. addresses topics such as the misconceptions, challenges, and opportunities of followership, as well as the relational dynamic between followers, leaders, and other followers.
As I read the book I felt that the author gave a comprehensive overview of what it means to be a follower. He covers a lot of ground in the book and draws upon the work of many other authors (however few there may be) who have written on followership. As such, I feel like this book will serve anyone well who wants a good foundation for thinking, acting, and thriving as a good follower. In the future I hope that there will be more niche books and articles about followership in specific areas of life, such as there are in regards to books on leadership.
This book is a must-read for leaders at all levels of an organization, for followers who love being great at what they do, and for those who have become disallusioned with their role, and who are ready for encouragement and release.
Read and enjoy.
This book will find a significant place in my executive coaching/consulting business.
