A maiden to be saved . . .

During the murderous assault on the village of Vaux, little “Ana” lost all she knew. Suddenly, out of the burning wreckage, a young man appeared and rescued her from the horrors of the night. He proved to be a squire in a company of knights, on their way to join the Crusades. At a neighboring village, he delivered her into the care of a peasant couple who promised to love her. Before departing, he gifted her with something to remember him by . . . the silver cross from around his neck.

A wrong to be righted . . .

After a decade of fighting in the east, Sir Royce de Warrene returns to England a celebrated knight. But he soon discovers the terrible mistake he made on that long-ago night. The orphan girl was no peasant child, but an heiress of noble blood — Lady Juliana Mandeville — and he deprived her of her birthright. He is charged with a quest — to find her at once and restore her to her grandfather — by order of the king!

Love to be fulfilled, fated long ago . . .

Now grown to womanhood, the stunningly beautiful and saucy “Ana” refuses to believe the knight when he disrupts her wedding day, intent on taking her from those she loves and to deliver her to strangers at the English court. She grips the silver cross she wears, wishing her gallant squire could rescue her once more. Although she cannot remember his face clearly and never knew his name, she has not forgotten the night he saved her so long ago . . .

I'm always relieved when a book written by a friend turns out to be a good read. Then I can post an honestly positive review for it. This book is well constructed, well-researched, and fun to read. I'm no medieval expert, but I'm interested in the period, play with the SCA when I have the time, belong to the Historical Novel Society and know enough to catch out a writer who is fudging the details. Potatoes in the stew and tomatoes in the pasta give me fits. This is known as 'potato rage' in some circles.

Kirkwood knows her stuff. All the delightful little details of daily life in the middle ages ring true from the description of dress to where to sit at a banquet. The people don't act like modern people plopped down in a different era. They behave in ways appropriate to their time/place no matter how annoying that may be to us. That being said, the universal human emotions that are never bound to time/place are richly depicted.

If you enjoy a good medieval historical, I recommend this. Kirkwood never puts a foot wrong throughout the entire book. Now I'm on to another of her books, a time/slip story called--ta-da! A Slip in Time.

Disclosure: I bought and paid for this book with my own money what I earned with gainful employment.

5.0 de 5 estrelas My Fair Lady is a true love story 2 de abril de 2013

This is the second book by Kathleen Kirkwood that I have read and it did not disappoint. The love story of Royce and Ana was absolutely lovely. He was her true knight in shining armour. The man that we all would love to have in our life. In this story, We find young Royce as a squire with dreams of knighthood. He is traveling with his knight to meet King Richard and join the crusades. They stumble upon a village that has been attacked and immediately look for survivors. Amoung the carrnage, they discoveer young Ana ad she immediately finds comfort with Royce. He takes her to the next village and entrusts her care to a peasant family living within its keep. Years later, he has grown into a man and the little girls long lost grandfather requests that the knight find his granddaughter and return her to him. Jumping forward, we now find the lovely Ana who has grown into a woman and is about to the married. Royce interrupts the ceremony and whisks Kate back to English soil. This, of course, does not sit well with Ana. She tried everything to escape and return to her foster family and the man she is about to marry. Her antics are most enjoyable throughout the tale, as well as, poor Royce's response. He does not tell Ana that he was her young squire and she does not reveal that she has secretly hoped he would return and claim her for his own. The story proceeds with many ups and downs that the couple must endure before they find themselves eventually realizing that their paths were leading towards one another. This is a must read. I highly recommend this historical romance to any readers of this genre. You won't be disappointed.

This was a good overall romance. It had a good storyline. It did not have a lot of steamy parts...which fit this book perfectly. I have read tons of books, many have not kept my attention. This is a keeper.

The story was a good read but there were parts of it that took me awhile to read. It had action through out the book and I like the characters and it showed King John in a different light. Most writer's have put King John in a bad light which I am sure every King or Queen has their good sides and their bad sides. I normally read a book in less than a week but this one took me two weeks to read it because I kept putting it down. I gave this story four stars because overall the book was good except for the boring few parts.

I was so excited when I read the synopsis of the plot. It appeared to have such promise for a grand romance. Unfortunately, the author took it in a direction that was very disappointing, in my opinion.

In the beginning, although a very young squire, you can tell that the hero is chivalrous and honorable and his compassion for the traumatized young girl is sincere and genuine.

What I really hated was the antagonism, lying and fighting the heroine engaged in with the hero after he found her as an adult. I kept thinking he would reveal his identity to the heroine and things would have gone much differently for them . As it turned out, the hero kept trying to do the right thing anyway. The heroine was not very likeable for most of the book.

I hate it when authors utilize a lack of communication as a plot device to create unnecessary and obvious problems between the hero and heroine, which is what happened by having the hero's identity unknown to the heroine through most of the book..

For me, I would have enjoyed the book so much more if there would have been more of a romantic love story developing between the hero and heroine, rather than having a misunderstanding between them for nearly the entire book.

Also, the appearance of the villain and the ending felt like the author was just rushing to tie up the loose ends.

Bottom line? The book could have been a terrific book because it had a great plot line but the author failed on several levels, in my opinion.
