Prequel to the Jewels of Chandra series
Magic is real. So is betrayal.
One thousand years before the series Jewels of Chandra, the Kingdom of Shaylar plunged into chaos.
Before the fall, before the wizards interfered, before the Kingdom crumbled to dust, the highborn monarch of Shaylar ruled in peace.
Rivalry, jealousy, a desperate attempt to grab the magic of Shaylar—all converge to bring about the end of the precarious balance between the Five Kingdoms.
As King Narmek and Queen Meelate celebrate the birth of their twin boys, the seeds of malice are sown. But the grab for power began with the wizards long before that.

5.0 de 5 estrelas The Wonderful World of Shaylar 12 de maio de 2014
Por Ron Fritsch - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle Compra verificada
I’ve enjoyed reading the first two novels in River Fairchild’s Jewels of Chandra fantasy series, Diamonds and Dust and A Dragon’s Lament. Now Fairchild has favored her readers with a prequel novella, The Fall of Shaylar. Once again, Fairchild doesn’t disappoint.

Chandra is a world that once had five kingdoms. One of them, Shaylar, ceased to exist as a kingdom a thousand years ago. During the time of the first two novels in the Jewels of Chandra series, the highborn, including the thanes and the nobility, possess magic. The lowborn don’t. Many of them, chafing under the rule of the thanes, hope for the restoration of the kingdom.

Now Fairchild lets us know how Shaylar fell. It’s peaceful and prosperous under King Narmek and Queen Meelate. Then she gives birth to twin sons, Camon and Sanrev. And wizards, anticipating a royal sibling rivalry, plot to steal Shaylar’s magic.

The Fall of Shaylar is the kind of yarn I’ve come to expect from River Fairchild. Which flawed prince will win and which will lose? What will the wizards win, if anything? What happens to the other four kingdoms? If Chandra itself collapses, what will be the fate of the sister world to which it is tethered, the one called Earth?
4.0 de 5 estrelas Nice Prequel to a Promising Series 25 de outubro de 2014

The Fall of Shaylar starts with the promising birth of Narmek’s heir, a son. Instead of one, though, he is given two. I liked how River Fairchild showed us Narmek’s nerves while Meelate (his wife) gave birth. It was reminiscent of all expectant fathers. But an oracle has a vision of the end of Shaylar after the twins’ births, predicting their hatred for each other would lead to ruin.

Fairchild’s words pull you into the story. It’s impossible not to get sucked in and feel like you are in Shaylar during these dark times. There’s romance and heartbreak in this story, as well as doom and despair. Fairchild writes a great story about a Kingdom going to ruin and two brothers who would do anything to stop the other from having an ounce of happiness.

I liked following each brother—one wanting nothing but to rule and the other wanting love. However, I would have liked to see Servin’s plan to free the Queen, Lamisha, play out. I think that would’ve been exciting to read. But the end still had my jaw dropping several times at the unexpected events.

Overall, The Fall of Shaylar is an enjoyable read and it is a nice prequel to a promising series.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Cool blend of fantasy, fairytale and myth with real human drama 27 de agosto de 2014
Por Sheila Deeth - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle
Prequel to the Jewels of Chandra series, The Fall of Shaylar tells how the human kingdom, one of five on a strange and magical world, comes to be in such disarray by the time the main story begins. Myths briefly mentioned in the longer work come to life as this tale is told. There's a classic feel to the language and threat. And there's something very satisfying about characters who prove they can change, rising above or falling below the promises of youth.

The story hinges on a prophecy's cruel threat. But perhaps wise actions might alter the future, or mitigate its gloom. Or foolish actions may bring about the worst of what might be avoided. Can the wrong brother be right after all, or will these broken loyalties destroy them all?

Whatever the outcome, the stage will soon be set for an epic tale, and this story has a pleasing blend of fairytale’s wisdom, fantasy’s scope, and human drama writ large.

Disclosure: It was free and I like the series, so I “bought” it.

5.0 de 5 estrelas A must read for fantasy fans 11 de junho de 2014
Por Christine Rains - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle
The Kingdom of Shaylar enjoyed peace and prosperity for many years. When an oracle brought the King a horrible vision about his twin sons, the father who loved his children would not listen. He had the oracle put to death. One should always listen to the messages of the gods.

This marvelous story takes place one thousand years before the events in the series Jewels of Chandra. These are the tragic events that led to the magic fleeing and the kingdom turning to dust. You don't need to have read any of the books in the series to enjoy this one. It stands proudly as a well-written and epic fantasy tale on its own.

The plot takes us on a dark journey where it twists with the characters themselves. The twins come from a family of love but it is not enough to stop what is to come. Great characterization and beautiful setting. This is a must read for fantasy lovers.

5.0 de 5 estrelas The Fall of Shaylar 21 de junho de 2014
Por Elephant's Child - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle
This stunning novella is a more than worthy precurser to the events in the Jewels of Chandra Series.

King Narmek and Queen Meelate are looking forward to the birth of their first child - as it happens to the birth of their two first children, twin boys. A good reason to celebrate. A wonderful reason to celebrate. Except when it isn't.
And King Narmek ignores (and has killed) the advice ot prophets to the contrary at huge cost.

Prince vies with Prince. Who will win, who will fall. And what will come after...

For a change, I read the prequel first. And no sooner finished it than I launched myself into the first from the Jewels of Chandra series Diamonds and Dust.
