In combination with the concepts from Blanchard's One Minute Manager (especially the first one and Leadership and the One Minute Manager) this book completes a "how-to" of personnel management. If you treat One Minute Manger advice as stuff you SHOULD DO, and use Lencioni's warnings of dysfunction as examples of stuff you and your team SHOULD NOT DO, (that is to say, don't let the dysfunctions happen) you will strike a balance of masterful skill in leadership and management.

The point about team members being willing and able to debate substantive issues without fear is very representative of the way successful teams worked at NASA in the 1960s through about 1985, and so this point is, I believe, correct. Further, the idea that very top management must be on board with this idea for it to work is also correct, because if management disapproves of conflict and disagreement, it will reassign people and destroy teams that discuss and debate openly.

However, the fictional (non-empirical) idea that a manager can create such a team by kicking off the people who disagree violates the very trust and freedom from retaliation principles that are necessary at the base of the pyramid, and I believe this reflects the author's lack of actual experience at other than consulting.

I really enjoy this material, however, in my opinion, it's incomplete. It does an adequate job of explaining the 5 Dysfunctions, but unless you have some knowledge of many other tools and techniques, it does not offer any real methods for implementing the ideas. It's like they wrote this to introduce people to the Dysfunctions and expect them to go to the training to find out how to fix them. As a consultant and trainer, I have to supplement these concepts extensively to make them usable for clients. A good example is the first Dysfunction (Trust). While the book explains its importance and some basic ideas to increase trust, if you don't use an instrument such as the DISC, MBTI, SDI, or similar tool, you can't just improve trust. Different types of people have completely different issues in relation to overcoming trust issues.

The breakdown of common problems experienced by teams is done very well. I enjoyed the latter half of the book much better than the first half. Though the story did manage to illustrate a few of the challenges a leader may face while trying to "grow" their team, it seemed very stiff. I did not feel that the story offered as much insight as the breakdown of each dysfunction in the second portion. I felt three stars was fair as I could have saved time by skipping the first part.

I've read a lot of leadership books, and this one is my favorite. It's told in a fable setting with a made-up company and staff. The ideas presented about developing a team seem obvious, but when you dig deeper, you realize how challenging it can be. There's a lot of insight offered here, and it's great to reference back to.

I've read it once and listened to it on Audible twice. I give it to all the leaders I help develop and they all love it. It's easy reading, but presents it in a non-threatening way. Definitely should be required reading for all managers.
