Like encyclopedias dedicated to exploring the Star Wars or Star Trek universe, or Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, this is a comprehensive compendium covering the franchise's various incarnations from it's beginning to current times (1995-2017). It is a lovingly compiled book with fantastic art and an exhaustive explorations of all things Ghost in the Shell. The may not be the best introduction to the GitS universe as it is ideally suited for the fan who is in to all of the minutia. It is a solid, well printed hardcover that would make a great gift.
I wasn't expecting much from the new Ghost in the Shell movie, so I wasn't surprised when it wasn't that great. Thankfully, less than 10 pages of the 160 of Ghost in the Shell README: 1995-2017 cover the new Hollywood movie. This section is also in the beginning of the book, instead of where it chronologically belongs at the end, but is otherwise less forced than I expected.
That out of the way, the rest of the book covers all of the animated movies and shows. There's an introduction to each, a story breakdown, character and mechanics information (including original sketches), landscapes, analysis of the last shot of the movie/series, a column on some relevant topic, and mysteries and answers, which are basically a few questions some may have about elements of the media, and answers to them.
I like that each section has these same elements, and am really a fan of the original sketches, some of which include notes about how they should be treated when animated. The only thing that would have made these better is if the illustrations and landscapes would have been allowed more space, which would have necessitated more pages, since every page is already full of art and text.
If you're coming to Ghost in the Shell because of the new movie, I think you'd be disappointed with this book, given how little ties to it. The same could be said if you're only familiar with the manga.
However, if you're familiar with the franchise, and would like a book that is somewhere between an art book and history, then I think you'd find this a nice book for your bookshelf, especially given the low price.
Lastly, the book itself is very nice. The binding is great and the pages have the right thickness and gloss.
For someone such as myself, I give Ghost in the Shell README: 1995-2017 a full five of five stars. Recommended.

Each film or TV series gets its own chapter in the book to showcase its unique artwork, story background, characters, weapons and other information. It is a great way to visualize the progression of the classic as it transitioned through the 22 years of history.
Keep in mind that this is not a thick book. With 8 volumes in the filmography, you can't really get a lot of details and artwork in 160 pages. This is more of an introduction and highlights to the classic. The good news is that the publisher has put in a lot of good stuff in it, but not nearly enough that I would give it 5 stars. If you crave for more in-depth coverage and artwork of the films and TV series, you'll have to source the individual art books, possibly from Japan.
The book is printed on high-quality paper and nicely hard cover bounded as you would expect of any high-quality art books. The cover image and text is printed directly on the hard cover. There is no printed cover wrap to crease or wear out.
All in all, this is a great coffee table book for the fans of the Ghost in the Shell classic. It provides a good introduction to the filmography and a nice collection of the artwork that will bring a smile to your face.
