HTML5 is revolutionizing the Web, and now it's coming to your ebook reader! With the release of the EPUB 3 specification, HTML5 support is officially a part of the EPUB standard, and publishers are able to take full advantage of HTML5's rich feature set to add rich media and interactivity to their ebook content.

HTML5 for Publishers gives an overview of some of the most exciting features HTML5 provides to ebook content creators--audio/video, geolocation, and the Canvas--and shows how to put them in action. Learn how to:

  • Intersperse audio/video with textual content

5.0 de 5 estrelas Good information & examples but not very broad or in-depth 7 de maio de 2013

I'm the developer of an HTML & CSS checking tool for Windows so I've had more than my 'fair share' learning HTML and CSS, but I was not as familiar with eBook publishing, MathML, and SVG.

I can say that I enjoyed reading this book and think I learned a good amount of information from it even though it's not that lengthy, in-depth, or broad. I'd say it's an 'intermediate' level book. It's not for beginners because it assumes one already knows a bit about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. More advanced or experienced programmers could also learn from this book if they are not familiar with the presented topics.

As some other reviews may mention, it doesn't cover a great deal and doesn't go into deep detail, but I still found it interesting and informative. The examples certainly did their job in explaining and clarifying certain aspects of things like canvas, geolocation, and MathML, and SVG. Also, the book gives some good references that one can use to further investigate topics and go deeper into the details.

If I had paid $20+ for it, then I could understand the lower ratings, but for the current price of $0, I really can't find anything to complain about, so I'm giving this book 5 stars. I certainly got more than my money's worth out of it.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Good intro: Good examples, clear explanation 15 de dezembro de 2011

HTML5 for Publishers is a tutorial aimed at publishers who want to expand their ebooks beyond traditional text-and-graphics. This ebook addresses how to add Canvas, Geolocation, and Audio/Video.

It starts with a brief tutorial on HTML and JavaScript and then move to specific examples that put HTML5 in action.

(1) The specific demos include a graphic calculator that uses Canvas.
(2) Finger painting application for drawing pictures on a page
(3) Demp of how an ebook can be customized with the reader's current location
(4) An audio-enabled glossary that lets you hear each term
(5) Embedded video along with instructional text to supplement the video

You get the actual code for the example from a web download specified in the book along with the explanations. The explanations are clear, the examples are complete, the author allows portions of the code to be re-used without asking for permission.

I liked the author also states the compatibility with major EPUB reader platforms for each feature.

This is an excellent tutorial, it exceed my expectations in both clarity and completeness.

2.0 de 5 estrelas Extremely vertical market/high level intro. 6 de agosto de 2014

Sanders Kleinfeld, HTML5 for Publishers (O'Reilly Media, 2011)

A very high-level overview of three specific new features in HTML5; the title is a bit misleading in that regard. If you're interested in learning the basics about canvas, audio/video embedding, or geolocation, this is an interesting starting point—but eventually you will find yourself needing to grab a more in-depth resource. In other words, if you already know you are interested in incorporating these things into ebooks, you can simply skip this and dive straight into something that goes into more detail. On the other hand, if you just want to explore the possibilities, this is a quick, easy read that will do just that. **
2.0 de 5 estrelas Very basic and outdated 17 de outubro de 2016

A trivial, outdated pamphlet showing three features of HTML5 (Canvas, Geolocation, Audio/Video content), with information on embedding in EPUB documents. It's nice that there's some demo code, but that doesn't get you very far.

As the end of each chapter points out, support for these features was very limited when this book came out (2011), and still not universal.
