This book will take you on a compelling journey that will stay with you long after you have turned the last page. A book which has been beautifully written and is ultimately a book you simply can’t put down. I, for one, feel all the richer for having read it. There’s no doubt that this author is uniquely talented and I’ll be looking forward to reading more from her in the future.
If you are looking for something fresh, unique and imaginative, these short stories would come highly recommended from me. Five stars.
The author, Haidji, takes a quote, which can be considered the essence, from each of her 15 short stories and then expounds on it.
The best way to read each of these stories is not to rush through them, as you might miss something in the process; and to get the full impact of what Haidji is writing is to read it a second time. The reason for this I believe is her thought provoking style of writing, which is something you don’t read that often. There’s a certain wonderful mixture and balance in the detailed imagery that’s created in your mind, an imagery where you find yourself pondering over what you’ve just read.
A good adjective to describe these short stories is to say they’re quite enlightening. Enlightening to the extent that you’ll find yourself relating to the stories on a personal level.
For having given her readers a marvelous excursion of your own existence, I’m happy to give Haidji 5 STARS for her endeavor here.
Her writing is delightfully different. I don’t think English is her native language since some of her turns of phrase are rather quaint and perhaps incorrect. But her style adds to her uniqueness.
At the end of each story Haidji extracts its main message/moral; she spells out for us what she wants us to understand. For example, “If you don’t value what you do, asking the right price for it, no one else will do it.”
Another example of her messages is: “Your dream is always there, always inside of you. Keep working on it, and you can go more far than you imagine you could.”
Perhaps I don’t really understand all of Haidji’s stories – perhaps I’m not romantic enough.
I love the story called “Candles”. Maddie’s grandmother asks her what she wants to be when she grows up. 6-year-old Maddie replies “Can I still be me? Am I not already who I am? Will I be someone else then?”
I remember when I was a small child I was afraid that when I grew up I would have to be a housewifely person like my mother. At that age, not knowing much of the world, I thought that all grown-up women had to be like this. I knew that was not me, and it would be frightful if I had to become like that.
Little Maddie continues to ponder, “Will I need to do the same for my whole life? The same thing every single day?” Her final decision is “I want to always be me.”
Another spark of wisdom – “Our present time is the only thing we truly possess in our lives. --- Our present moment. It is always there.”
Some of Haidji’s stories are about children, seen from their point of view.
One is about Paulette who was under house arrest for a reason she did not exactly remember. “The sun going down over the city was orange due to the air pollution, but this did not make the color less beautiful for Paulette.”
Paulette was being raised in a house that was far from peaceful, but she had peace within herself.
“Sitting on the branch of a tree, as high as she could be, No one could touch her, no house arrest; the sky was so close that she could almost touch her dreams.”
For those who are dreamy and romantic, or those who need more dreams and romance in their lives, I would recommend this dreamy, romantic, poetic collection of stories.”
Harables 2 is a unique and thoughtfully woven collection of short stories.
Each of these tales speaks volumes about how intelligently they might have been pondered upon.
Honored to have read an exceptional writer Haidji!
A collection of short stories can't be better than this.
She picks up the characters we can relate to easily and narrates you about them as if those characters are your best-friends.
They seem to real, so close, so true.
She stimulates the naughty yet innocent, laughing yet thoughtful kid inside you and formulates the sweet and caring equations that you didn't know existed.
As I already have said and I'll say it once more, her books are a blessing.
Reading Haidji's books is the super-duper Christmas gift I had received.
After reading it, I'm certain that Haidji possesses world-class qualities!
One of which is writing and another is representing it to the world!
Verdict : Having a tough day? Read Harables and forget what the word 'tough' is!
