Descrições do Produto

Descrição do produto

The Lord Alchemist must be immune to hostile potions. But in all of Cymelia, there are only three with the alchemist's immunity: Iathor, his brother Iasen, and the half-barbarian herb-witch, Kessa.

Though Kessa is hardly the expected wife of a noble, Iathor has secured a betrothal - but his brother has vowed to prevent the marriage by any means necessary.

Iathor will do whatever he can to keep his wife, no matter what she's done or what his brother tries, but Kessa's own dark secrets may sabotage any hope of a happy ending.

(Herb-Wife is the second in the Lord Alchemist duology, and is the sequel to Herb-Witch.)

4.0 de 5 estrelas Engaging, well-developed fantasy world 28 de junho de 2015
Por L. R. - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle Compra verificada
This book and the previous one, Herb-Witch, read more like one long book than two separate books: I bought Herb Wife as soon as I finished the first. The split into two books isn't wholly arbitrary and the end of the first book does signal a shift in focus. But neither volume is meant to stand alone.

I enjoyed the books more as fantasy-slice-of-life than anything else. The setting is well-developed and interesting, and the characters are plausible and nuanced. The magic of the setting -- alchemy and herb-witchery -- is low-key by fantasy standards; it's almost believable as a form of chemistry instead of being magical. The central plot is technically a romance: it's mainly about the relationship between the two protagonists. Still, it reminded me more of Bard Bloom's irromances: it is more about making a relationship work when you're stuck with it than about finding a soulmate or getting swept up by a grand passion. There's also some mystery and adventure elements. Overall, I liked it.

5.0 de 5 estrelas Good character development and well paced plotline 6 de setembro de 2012

As soon as I finished Herb-Witch I bought this one to see what happened next. Unlike most novels that deal with a subtle plot with multiple motivations and possible endings, I didn't notice any plot holes; every hint or suspicion or act that was brought into play was wrapped up and addressed, with a very satisfying ending. I liked the slow development of the romance between Kessa and Iathor, and the realistic way they dealt with her virginity. I am so tired of romance novels that act like the first time is this super pleasurable experience and there is never any aftermath. I was incredibly pleased with the realistic way the characters dealt with it too- Kessa being stubborn and Iathor going with her wishes despite his misgivings, then finding a way around her stubborness to show her something better.

Although Kessa and Iathor where the most well fleshed out the supporting characters definitely had a lot of thought put into them; they where people, not just card board cut outs.

I liked the pace of the novel- it was steady, with hints of thrill, but none of the over the top drama of high speed chases and daring rescues that's so prevalent in fantasy romances. The way everything developed steadily, plot threads interweaving, made it an incredibly intellectually satisfying read as well as a pleasurable one. FOr once I wasn't sitting there going "Mhmm, and then this will happen, they will kiss and oohlala and that guy is the bad guy." It still managed to surprise me in the end.

All in all a very solid read that I highly recommend.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Much better than expected 16 de agosto de 2012

I honestly rarely have good expectations of works that are not published through major publishers. They're usually poorly edited, oddly plotted, and generally either not ready for market or plain bad. However, this book was *excellent*. It was well edited, nicely plotted, thoroughly interesting, and just a darn good read. I wouldn't advertise it as a mystery, or a love story, precisely, though it's technically both of those things. It's a good tale, with a nicely detailed fantasy world. I would stack it up against any of the popular fantasy works right now, and I'm definitely going to recommend it to my friends.
3.0 de 5 estrelas Editing for clarity 22 de agosto de 2015

I enjoyed the main plot (though it dragged) and the characters (though the age difference was sometimes unpleasant). Overall, the author could benefit from editing for clarity and efficiency: she doesn't spoon feed the reader, but so often the meanings were very obscure and I needed to reread the sentence several times to suss out the point. There was also just too much wordiness! Much time is taken for each scene and dialogue, regardless of importance -- and even the fight scenes happen in such ponderous slow motion that they became boring. Frustrating going.

The plot got me to the end, but I am glad to be done.

5.0 de 5 estrelas Excellent follow-up to a spectacular book. 29 de fevereiro de 2012

The Herb-Witch/Herb-Wife duology is neither your typical romance nor your typical fantasy. In a world where magic is 'mere' alchemy but stories of dragons live on, Elizabeth McCoy weaves an engrossing tale of Kessa and Iathor weaving their way through politics, intrigue, adventure, and the much more dangerous questions of family to begin a life together... for whatever their reasons.

I don't like spoilers, so instead of a synopsis, let me say that when I finished this book, I immediately read the first again, and then this one once more - despite having read them before. I've caught more details of the elaborate world building on every read-through. The culture surrounding the protagonists and which shapes them and their actions is not generic at all, but with its own ...taste and scent. (For more, I recommend The Bear Prince, a set of fictional fairy-tales from the same world that give their own insights into the minds of the characters.)

I highly encourage you to purchase these books! The more people that buy, the more likely I'll get to read further adventures in this unique world.
