As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.

Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit is doing everything in his power to destroy their new-found happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world… forever.

Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, ‘Hereafter’ is a sensation you won't want to miss.

Hereafter, by Tara Hudson, is another breakthrough novel in that growing class of "Young (at heart?) Adult" stories. Extremely well written. A very quick read. Your teen girl will love it. Your wife will probably love it, as well.

Synopsis (no spoilers):

Amelia is dead. Not in that cool "I'm dead, so now I'm stronger, faster, and sexier with super powers" vampire way. She's dead in that sucky "I can't remember anything about my life, can't affect anything in the world, wake up in the same place every time" Groundhog Day kinda way. But that all changes when, you guessed it, she meets a boy. Not just any old regular teenage male, but The Boy.

Joshua, is the popular, good-looking nice guy that just happens to drive his car of the same bridge, into the same river, where Amelia perished. After his brief crossover into the land incorporeal, Joshua returns to life and thanks to some family "seer" blood, can now, well, "see" Amelia. The two begin to interact which, with no one being able to view Amelia, leads to some interesting high school hijinx.

Of course, the story isn't complete without an opposing suitor for Amelia's attentions. Enter Eli, a rock'n'roll ghost who 'recruits' other recently departed souls into a colorless, dreary afterlife. He has some power over these wraiths granted to him from his employers. You know what they say. It's better to reign in colorless, dreary afterlife than to serve in, well ... Eli wants a junior-partner/love-interest and thinks Amelia will fit the job. Unlike other stories in the genre, Amelia isn't torn in her love between the two. In fact, she is clearly only interested in one person, and it ain't Eli.

You throw in some supporting cast including a spunky younger sister and a ghost-exocising witch of a grandmother and the stage is set. Amelia has to figure out who she is, what she can do, and also sort out her feelings for the one person she can't have. Or can she?

Notes:

The writing style is very good. Tara Hudson does have a gift for story telling. Of course, in this tale, you do have that "just add water Insta-Love" but that is how it works for some people. Sometimes love takes time to mature and sometimes is jumps out and attacks like a ninja. Either way, the main audience for this book are young adults, so love that happens in an instant, in a heartbeat, is proper.

The cover art is absolutely amazing. Perfect for the mood of the novel. Good choice publisher.

If you like other supernatural/fantasy young adult novels, you will absolutely enjoy this book. Kudos to the author.

About Me:

First of all, I'm a married male in his 30's that has never written a book, nor desired to write a book.

I'm a reader. No ties to the publishing industry. I don't have a blog or twitter account. I just like to read.

In Tara Hudson's debut Hereafter was Amazing! I thought it was full of thrill, mystery and every detail was like I was there. I fell in love with the story and Amelia + Joshua all at once!! It had a lot of twists and turns that will make you think after you read it. From the very first pages and learning bits of pieces of Amelia throughout the book was very well done because the character grew as well.

The entire story was very put together soo well that I had to know what happened to Amelia and the reason for her death will shock you and I devoured this book !!! It will suck you in because it was addicting and will always keep you interested! Amelia's nightmares replays some of her death and how she drowned at High Bridge, when she wakes up she see a boy who crashed in this river where she died and saves him. We meet our next character Joshua, who is adorable, cute and is willing to help Amelia piece together her death because he can see her, problem is others can't, but he has the ability to touch her and speak to her. Josh was such a great character because he will make your whole day brighter!! Their connection was great because Josh liked her for who she was, and encourages her to find out who she was.

Eli was a very complex character who loved to have his way. He has a way of making you mad because his personality and what he did to both Amelia and Joshua were like OMG moments that you couldn't believe that happened. I didn't like what he did, but he was a good character to set the balance of good and evil.

Each character plays a role in this book and you have to pay attention to the details, I had to re-read one part because the scene was soo intense that I had to read the details. I loved the ending, and it had my attention and alert of what was happening! Tara Hudson's writing was very well done and it kept me wanting more by the end!!! I am looking forward to the sequel Arise and to find out what will happen next to these characters!! If you haven't read this book, definitely pick it up if you like supernatural!!

5.0 de 5 estrelas A fabulous ghost story! 10 de maio de 2012

This one has been on my Kindle forever, but since I got Arise at RT, I thought this was a good time to read it!! Tara Hudson did a fabulous job! There aren't too many ghost books out there, the first I ever read was The Mediator series by Meg Cabot aka Jenny Carroll (the first 4 books) and I've read a few since then and now Hereafter is added to the list as the most incredible ghost books ever! (still have Anna Dressed in Blood to read too!)

So onto the review. Hereafter takes us into the life of Amelia, a ghost. She knows she's a ghost and everything, but that's about all she knows. She can't remember almost anything else about herself, her life before and her death. She knows she drowned I believe, but that's all. Then one night she sees someone else drowning, someone who fell of "her" bridge and into "her" river. She is helpless to save him since she can't touch him or anything. She does what she can and tries to shout, but he can't hear her...until he does.

Joshua almost died and was suddenly able to see and hear Amelia. And thus he is saved. Amelia believes their encounter to over, yet it's not. Some days later he finds her and wants to talk to her and Amelia is stunned since no one alive has ever noticed her before and thus a bond is formed.

It really was quite interesting to see how another author creates a relationship between a human and a ghost, which is by far the hardest relationship to maintain. But something happens when Amelia and Joshua are together. They can touch. And feel their touches. Joshua has a family secret that can explain all these things and does come up fairly quickly.

But being involved with a human isn't Amelia's only problem. Her other problem is another ghost, Eli. Don't worry there's no love triangle here. Eli is purely the psychotic ghostly villain who wants Amelia in the possessive way. He's quite creepy. He too has many secrets that revolve around Amelia and he seems to know more about her than she would like. His mentioning of his bosses also worries her. Apparently the ghost community is much bigger than she thought--which was nonexistent.

Hereafter is a fascinating ghost story! With a little bit of love on the side too! There's action and lots of some intense moments, such as the old woman who wants to exorcise Amelia since she is a ghost! This was a fairly quick read for me as well and had I not been employed this easily could've been a one day read, one and half tops! So glad to have Arise ready and waiting!

Ghost books are, in my opinion, hard to do. Especially when the main character is going to be one and maintain a relationship with someone who is alive. It's a tricky concept and has a lot of boundaries to overcome, but with the right author it is entirely possible and Hudson totally blows the idea out of the water! It was fabulous!!

3.0 de 5 estrelas Cute ghost story with a lot of romance 14 de dezembro de 2013

I went into this expecting a fun ghost story, and that's pretty much what I was given. I'm always down for a good ghost story, and I definitely enjoyed this one! It had mystery, romance, a bad guy, teenage angst, and so much more. I did have a hard time getting into it, but once I finally got past all of the introductions I found myself not wanting to put the book down.

Most of this book focuses on the romance between Amelia and Joshua. How they meet, how they start to fall in love, what happens once they do. Although everything happens a little fast for my tastes, I think it's written in a way that doesn't make it seem so fast. I mean, it's pretty much love at first sight, but at least they spent hours talking to each other and getting to know one another. I guess. I also thought Joshua was a little too accepting of the fact that Amelia is dead.

The rest of the plot seemed a little like filler to me though. Amelia finding out who she really is and how she died all came about way too easily. Eli was more of a nuisance than a really bad guy; there was so much potential for his character and he's treated like some small problem that is left for someone else to take care of. The Seers are also something that could have been a huge problem from Amelia and Joshua and then... aren't. I wish there had been more of the bad guys being bad, the Seers being more aggressive, and the mysteries being more mysterious.

While Amelia and Joshua are pretty well developed, I think the minor characters are left too much by the wayside. We learn a little bit about Eli and his background, but I wanted to know more. I don't think enough was explained about why he is the way he is, and I think it should have been. I also wish he would have stayed around for the next book. And Jillian is painted as just an annoying younger sister, when I think she should have been so much more. Don't get me wrong, I loved them and I'm glad they were included (because who DOESN'T love a sexy rocker guy), I just wish they had been more dimensional.

Overall, I think I was looking forward to something more Anna Dressed in Blood with the creepy, spooky, hauntings and malevolent ghosts even though I knew this was a lighter romance. It was a nice spin on a ghost story though, and I think it would appeal to someone looking for a paranormal romance. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything spectacular in my opinion, so I would give this book a 3/5.
4.0 de 5 estrelas Really enjoyed 4 de janeiro de 2014

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure if I would, after reading other reviews of it, however I was very pleasantly surprised.

Out of all the paranormal romances there are, there's something about those with ghosts that really draw me in. Maybe it's because I really hope there are such things as ghosts, which would make these stories the closest to reality as they could, or some other unknown to me reason. Reading about the afterlife being tied to real life really interests me and I felt like Hudson did a great job in creating this story.

I really liked Amelia as a character, and going along with her as she discovered things about her life and death; seeing what made her what she was. Seeing her struggle with not knowing if she was a good person or not, what her past meant for her future and if she really had a choice in her afterlife was interesting to read and experience with her.

There were a couple things that kept me from thinking this was a 5 star book. The first was, while Amelia's attachment and love of Joshua made sense, it was a little harder to understand why Joshua felt so attached to her. I could understand wanting to know more about her, and wanting to know what had saved him from dying, but I felt after that is was a little confusing. The other little thing that bothered me a bit was the very beginning of the book. It felt a little off, and not like the rest of the book. I'm not sure if I could ever be able to explain what I mean by that, but it just seemed...different and not as effortless as the rest of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it was a wonderful read. It's definitely one of my favorite Young Adult novels I've read this year, and I certainly can't wait to read the next book.
