WINNER OF THE UTOPYA 2012 CON AWARD FOR BEST DEBUT NOVEL

My name is Evie Claremont and this was to be the making of me–my freshman year of college. I’d been hoping that once I’d arrived on Crestwood’s campus, the nightmare that I’ve been having would go away. It hasn’t.
I may be an inexperienced seventeen-year-old, but I’m grounded…sane. I look for rational explanations to even the strangest circumstances. Since meeting sophomore Reed Wellington, however, nothing makes any sense. Whenever he’s near, I feel an attraction to him–a magnetic kind of force pulling me towards him. I know what you’re thinking…that sounds fairly awesome. Yeah, it would be…if he liked me, but Reed acts as if I’m the worst thing that has ever happened to Crestwood…or him. But get this, for some reason every time I turn around he’s there, barging into my life.
What is the secret that he’s keeping from me? I’m hoping that it’s anything but what I suspect: that he’s not exactly normal…and neither am I. So, maybe Crestwood won’t be the making of me, but it could be the breaking of me. I’ve been left to wonder if the dark future my dream is foretelling is…inescapable.

I will admit, I did purchase the other books because all in all, I did like the book. Evie is an alright character, Russell I like and Reed, well, he's supposed to be the hottie of the book. The story line is a repeat; like others have stated, it is a LOT like Twilight. Reed is Edward, Russell is Jacob and Evie is Bella. Not that the idea is terrible, but it always seems that this is the usual story line for books. I like the take on angels and the fallen. That was pretty cool.

But why are we missing some stars? Well, the writing leaves a lot to be desired. Russell is a southern boy with the most annoying speech. I don't know about you, but when I know a person has an accent, I tend to read their lines with an accent in my head. But that's just me. Too many "ya" and such made it hard to read his lines and get what he's saying.

Another reason? I get that someone is absolutely beautiful and perfect, but the description of Reed being beautiful and perfect every time? Maybe because Reed is beautiful and perfect. You know, since he is beautiful and perfect. See how annoying that can get?

Also, I think the description was too much of a filler. I love a good visual and some authors really need to learn how to do so. But this book had way too much of it. It made the book longer than it could have been, which annoys me.

Last but not least, I don't like weak female characters. Evie tries to be strong, but gets picked up and carried to safety way too many times. Things like that annoy me.

For $2.99, it's not a bad buy. It's really not a bad read, but beware what everyone is complaining about because it will annoy you.

I went ahead and bought all the books in this series on the strength of The Kricket Series (3 Book Series), but I really could have done without. It is very Twilight. Mild spoiler alert - Instead of a vampire, the "Edward" character here (Reed) is an angel. As an atheist, I'm not a big fan of angels as characters generally, but I kept reading. Of course Reed appears to hate main character Evie at once for no apparent reason, which she obsesses about. Then it turns out to be for a supernatural reason. There is a lot of unnecessary angst and failure to read the other person's intentions, which are obvious to the reader. The "Jacob" of the story is named Russell and is a stereotypical Southern boy complete with chivalry etc. It's obvious from the first second with each character who will "win" this love triangle. Evie is immediately crazy hot for Reed, but seems to think she isn't good enough for him/is more trouble than she is worth, and can't be sure how he feels about her. Russell is nice instead of dark and brooding, but that just doesn't do it for Evie. I guess it wasn't completely horrible (I did actually read it), but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Read The Kricket Series (3 Book Series) instead if you want to read something by this author. It was somewhat predictable, but still good. You could probably find better Twilight fan fiction on the Internet, if that's the sort of thing you are interested in. The better advice is never read Twilight fan fiction (or Twilight). Read Throne Of Glass Series (5 Book Series), A Court of Thorns and Roses (2 Book Series), The Starbound Trilogy (3 Book Series), Defy Series (3 Book Series), The Lunar Chronicles (3 books), the series beginning with Graceling (Graceling Realm Book 1), or the series beginning with Poison Study (Soulfinders Book 1). All have strong female protagonists, adventure, fantasy &/or sci-fi, and romance, but are MUCH better done than this.

(Spoilers ahead)

ETA: I did finally trudge my way through this book, and my opinion did not improve. The introduction of yet another angel who almost immediately cares for Evie and the idea that Buns and Brownie are also angels, Russell's miraculous change...I just can't imagine reading anymore of this. I really feel like I got some sort of joke copy sent to my Kindle because so many people love it, but I just can't see it.

Pacing is everywhere. Several pages might be devoted to a field hockey game (FYI, if you're completely unfamiliar with a sport, reading a play-by-play of a game is incredibly boring). On the other hand, I feel like when she meets her new friends and love interests, I've missed something because of how close they are. Instantly. All of them. It feels like the story speeds along, then abruptly switches to slow motion. It's pages and pages of idle chatter in the cafeteria and following Evie as she gets ready for bed, then weeks are skipped because Evie was dumped.

The dialogue comes across as someone's misinformed idea of how teenagers/young college students are supposed to talk. The slang and its overuse make me cringe. If it weren't for the abuse of the word "sweetie," I wouldn't be able to tell Buns and Brownie apart. (And I can't take their characters seriously with nicknames like that.) Russell's written accent is terrible. I'm from the south, and I can assure you that we can, indeed, pronounce the word 'you.' Side note: Too much alliteration when naming characters seems lazy. Minor annoyances, yes, but incredibly avoidable ones.

As far as the love triangle and character development (if there is any), I feel a bit like I'm reading Twilight with angels. Right down to the mysterious supernatural hottie acting as if he hates the female lead, but who watches her sleep when she's unaware of his presence. Edward can't read Bella's thoughts; Reed can't use mind control on Evie. He forbids her from going places without telling him and gets incredibly angry when she does it anyway. I understand that his motives are to protect her, but they border on controlling and downright creepy at times.

Overall, I find Evie to be pretty weak. She seems driven and intelligent at first, but it doesn't last. She can't see why anyone could possibly fall for her, and after reading this book, neither can I.

“Inescapable” is a Teen and Young Adult Paranormal Romance written by Amy A. Bristol. It’s a lovely, if slow-moving, journey of self-discovery as our heroine learns not just who, but what, she is. I found the book imaginative, a bit reminiscent of the Twilight series but with its own spin and color.

The negatives:
The book was written in the first person point of view, and in the present tense, both of which were choices that made the book more challenging to enjoy. An overwrought southern accent on one central character was distracting, but he was likable and well-developed. Some of the characterizations were immature, perhaps more high school than college.

The positives:
The setting descriptions were rich and detailed. Our protagonist, Evie, was plucky and admirable. It’s a good series starter, as there’s obviously so much more story to be told as this book closes.

Okay- this is probably my favorite series of all times so I'll try hard not to gush the whole time! Let me start with how my love of this book started:

I was told by a friend of mine to try this book, so I did. I read the first three chapters and I called her and said "Oh my god, worst book ever". She told me to keep going, so I did. And THANK GOD FOR THAT! After I got used to the bad attempt and teenage language (that was my turn-off, the way the college kids said weird sayings- i dont know if kids really talk like that these days, but I hope not!) I was opened up to the best series EVER!

Spoilers!

Evie- My favorite book heroine. She is beautiful, bold and sincerely cares about her friends. Her transition from human to angel is fantastic and I cannot wait to see her full blown transformation!
Reed- SWOON! Who doesn't want a super hot avenging angel in love with them? He is hotness personified and sweet to boot!
Brennus- The hot villain- I'm not going to lie- throughout the series I go back and forth numerous times trying to figure out who I really want Evie to end up with!

The book has a million twists and turns and it takes you along a ride with these characters as if you are truly a part of the story. TRY IT!!
