When Caleb Devereaux's younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie's vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will do risk everything to protect her—including his heart. . . .

Someone, somewhere recommended I read “Keep Me Safe” by Maya Banks when they found out I love alpha males in full protect mode. I started this book with great enthusiasm, the plot on the blurb sounded awesome and right up my alley.

Please, for the love of all that is yummy and fun about erotic romance, don’t make the same mistake I did. This book is terrible. It is so terrible, I ….I did the unthinkable. Have you ever watched Gordon Ramsay on “Hell’s Kitchen” when someone makes something so god-awful he spits it into the trash can? That is what I did with this book – and thank god I stopped before I hurled. I couldn’t even bear to finish it. You know if you find yourself rolling your eyes and saying “Really? Oh my god, shut up!” out loud at the heroine several times in the story, it is not going well. This is the first review I have ever done where I did not finish the book, so keep that in mind.

Again, do NOT let the plot fool you. The plot is awesome. Ramie reluctantly helps save an innocent young woman who has been kidnapped and is being raped and tortured. She does this through a supernatural talent that allows her to sort of “merge” consciousness with anyone when she touches them or an item that is theirs. As a result, the young woman is rescued by her three over-protective brothers, and they all consider themselves in debt to Ramie. But they can’t find her to repay their debt. Ramie is on the run from a murderer who is stalking her through a psychic connection. For over a year she runs, until she is cornered, exhausted, and beaten. Then (after a year of running) she calls up the one man who owes her a debt of life and insists he pay up by protecting her.

Enter Caleb Devereaux, a strong solid alpha male who flies instantly to her rescue, whisking her to his family’s house for safety. After that, it becomes a game of trying to keep Ramie and everyone else alive while they hunt down the killer. An excellent plot, full of all sorts of wonderfully delicious potential. But it all ends up terribly, terribly wrong.

Where shall I start? Let’s start with the worst part about this book, the “heroine”. Ramie should have been named “Victim Sue”. She is an orphan – check. She has supernatural powers – check. Using those supernatural powers helps others but hurts her – check. She is totally on her own – check. She is constantly in emotional pain – check. Ramie doesn’t drown in self-pity. She wallows in it. She bathes in it on a daily basis. She cries or has nervous break downs or panic attacks more than she eats. It is the most obnoxious thing I have ever seen in a book. It is never good when you find yourself hoping the murderer catches the heroine and kills her so she will just shut up and stop whining. I have heard rumors he does catch up with her and it gets pretty bloody, but I have not read that myself. I didn’t make it that far. I was starting to heave.

As for the hero….well….what can I say? Caleb felt as if he were an erotic fantasy plastic ken doll. As if the writer went through a checklist. Strong, single, and financially powerful? Check. Guilt complex towards the heroine? Check. Protective instincts? Check. Sexually interested in the heroine? Check. It all felt…arranged. There was no life to him, no originality. Most of the time where we were reading his viewpoint it was “poor, poor Ramie”. Of course most the time we were reading her viewpoint, it was “poor, poor me.”

Maybe it gets better halfway through the book. I hope so. I stopped at the halfway point, I just couldn’t endure any more of it. If you feel braver than I, good luck! You are going to need it…

So, so, sooooooo bad.... First of all, HIRE AN EDITOR. The constant repetition would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. If anyone out there has great difficulty with reading comprehension, don't worry!! You'll be told the same thing seven, eight, nine times.... and then another eight, nine, ten times just to hammer it in there. Of course, if you remove all the repetition you'll likely end up with a 23-page novella, so I guess there's that. You are getting your money's worth in terms of page count. The other reason this book is so awful was the MELODRAMA. Absolutely everything (EVERYTHING!! See what I did there?) is over-the-top, over-exaggerated, over-(insert adjective of your choice here)... UGH Absolutely cringe-worthy. There's more but I don't even want to think about it. ZERO stars.

Keep Me Safe was paced really well and I connected immediately to Caleb and Ramie. I have read Maya Banks before and was interested to see her take on a paranormal series.

Ramie's gift takes us on a sensitive journey and your heart breaks for her loneliness and the horror she sees with her gift. I was thankful for Caleb and his strong protection of her after his initial poor treatment at the start of this story. Their love making was romantic and the caring way he treated her was beautiful.

One thing, I did not like was Caleb's brothers or his sister at all however I adored Dean, he was amazing and I felt his connection to help Ramie more than Caleb's brothers.

The ending was very quick and I feel as though there are some characters I needed some further closure on particularly Tori and Ramie. I admit by the end though I had forgiven his brothers as they stepped up to the plate when all the drama started.

The last quarter of this book just explodes with endless action and you will not be able to put it down.

Am I going onto the next book in this series, yes as I am enjoying the change in story telling by Maya.

This book starts right off with the action and never lets up until the very end! Caleb Deveraux is desperate to find his baby sister who has been kidnapped by a psychotic killer, so he tracks down the one person who can help him find her. Ramie St Clair. But after she vehemently shuts him down and tries to get him to leave, he thrusts his sister's scarf in her hands. Then he helplessly watches in horror as the reason for her almost 100% success rate plays out right in front of him. Ramie links with his sisterTori as she's tortured and raped and he sees the effects being played out on Ramie's body as well

He gets the information he needs to locate Tori and save her, but vows to return to Ramie and repay his debt to her and help her. Ramie leaves soon after, and Caleb spends a year trying to find her. But when a brilliant, killer who also has psychic abilities has a link to Ramie and has his sites set on her, she knows she needs help. So she decides to call Caleb for help, and he and his brothers have formed a security company in the last year since Tori's kidnapping. Caleb immediately places Ramie in protection and he flies out to get her, vowing that he will protect her.

The rest of the story is riveting, and I couldn't put the book down. I love all of Maya's books, but this is easily one of her best, even if it did go by quickly. It is a great first book to a new series and I cannot wait until the second book is released in January. Way to go Maya!

I thought I would really like this story, since so many reviewers indicated that the hero quickly fell in-love, a concept that is very rare in any romance book, regardless of the genre (thriller, historical, etc.), and this is a concept that I love. I almost never read any complaints in the reviews, when it is the heroine who falls in love quickly, but in the very rare occassions when it is the other way around, there are many who voice their complaints, but sometimes complaints make me decide to buy the book, as in this case. Goodness!!! I was so wrong, I hated the story, even though the hero fell in love easily. SPOILER ALERT TO FOLLOW:

Toward the end of the book the heroine is horribly slashed all over. I intensely dislike it, when a heroine is scarred during the progression of the story, as this heroine was. True the word "scar" was never used, but how could she not be terribly scarred for life, when she was carved like a holiday turkey all over: breast, stomach, belly, hip, arm, you get the idea. It seems to me this author has sometimes a predilection to make her heroes just about physically perfect, while her heroines have a devastating physical flaw. Of course this is very tragic and realistic, but not what I want in my fantasy read. At least this have been the case in the few books I have "tried" to read by Maya Banks. END OF SPOILER ALERT

I was also totally turned-off by what the hero did at the end, I know that it was beyond his control, and all that., but he is not the type of hero I want to read about either. Not very heroic, (and to me) his mind power came accross as weak. And as if this story could not get any worse(again for me), it definitely did, by the heroine's easy acceptance of his dastardly deed.
