***Mature Content***

Three men. Two women. New York City in the Sixties was a place and time when rock music ruled the airwaves and the souls of teenagers forging rebellious paths diverging from those of their conformist parents. Inside of a decade, life in the civilized world had undergone a paradigm shift, evolving from a single-course meal into a veritable buffet ... and the choices were endless.

Take four great-looking, talented performers and one gorgeous, brutally ambitious entertainment magazine editor; mix with childhood poverty, dysfunctional families, abusive lovers, a sociopathic impresario, and a cruelly vengeful spouse; season with money, playthings, sex and drugs; heat to boiling, stirring constantly; serve hot. That's the recipe for a wild, multicolored, and alternately joyous and heart-wrenching trip through the 1960s and '70s and beyond, with rock & roll music providing the soundtrack.

Nicky:
Tall, handsome, sexy, and talented, a shining star in the music world, Nicky Poole seems to have it all. Then a horrendous event permanently wrenches away his innocence, sending him into a tailspin and beginning a domino effect during which every element of his previously secure existence collapses like a house of cards. ...

Phil:
The son of a doctor who expects his youngest to follow him and his first two children into the medical profession, Phil Stefano defies his parents' wishes and sets out to become a rock and roll star. His big break comes even sooner than he had hoped for, but success comes at a high price. ...

Jill:
Young, blond and beautiful, Jill Simmons is head over heels in love with her singing and songwriting partner and live-in boyfriend. Life is perfect, and the future has never looked brighter; gigs and money are rolling in, and marriage and family are on the horizon. Until her boyfriend's behavior starts altering dramatically and the horizon begins moving further and further in the distance. ...

Eddie:
The product of a broken home and a cruelly indifferent father, Eddie Golden has grown up in poverty and misery. Success and money go to his head, and he suffers the inevitable consequences. Now he needs to pick himself up out of the rubbish heap and start virtually from scratch. ...

Jewel:
Exquisitely beautiful, a golden-skinned Asian-American woman of uncertain parentage and an air of mystery, Jewel Becker has taken over as editor-in-chief of a gossip magazine and single-handedly converted it into a respectable, highly successful publication. Yet despite her hard work, she is vilified by many who envy her beauty and success; and she has a wall around her that no one can penetrate. ...

Life Rocks On is a no-holds-barred look into the lives of five young people coming into their own during the turbulent '60s and '70s—young people who are seeking happiness and success in the fishbowl of fame, clawing their way to the summit (sometimes ruthlessly) and, through it all, facing not only the challenges unique to their line of work but also the same ones that all mortals face on a daily basis: They escape from dysfunctional households, contend with people in power, deal with the disappointment of rejection and unrequited love, suffer abuse from those who are supposed to have only their best interests at heart, battle illnesses and addiction, and lose friends and family members. Yet the human spirit keeps them going, keeps them wishing, dreaming, breathing ... and being.

Explicit content advisory: This book contains adult language and explicit sexual situations and is intended for mature audiences. It also contains references to incidents of abuse and violence which may be unsettling for certain individuals. Reader discretion is advised.

Life Rocks On is a believable account of the highs and lows of pop stars of the 1960s and ’70s, and those associated with them (e.g., managers, record producers, girlfriends/boyfriends, husbands/wives, parents, siblings, children…). When concert halls fill, fans demand encores, record sales soar, and royalties pour in, egos rise and pop stars believe they’re unrivaled. Then comes the sex, drugs, and relationships with mentally unstable associates, as well as wanted and unwanted children, complicating the emotions and wreaking havoc on partnerships, marriages, and careers.

The author does a superb job of developing the backstories of her main characters: Jill, Eddie, Nicky, Phil, and Jewel. About halfway through the book, I suspected it would have an unhappy ending. I was pleasantly surprised that it ended on a positive note—my favorite type of ending.
