Descrição do produto

For a fleeting instant Maria thought she saw a little white horse with a flowing mane and tail, head raised, poised, halted in mid-flight, as though it had seen her and was glad.'

The beautiful valley of Moonacre is shadowed by the memory of the Moon Princess and the mysterious little white horse. When Maria Merryweather comes there on a visit she finds herself involved with an ancient feud. She is determined to restore peace and happiness to the whole of Moonacre Valley. And Maria usually gets her own way…

‘The Little White Horse was my favourite childhood book. I absolutely adored it. It had a cracking plot. It was scary and romantic in parts and had a feisty heroine.’
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, writing in The Bookseller.

What a wonderful story! I saw this book on the the "Customers Also Viewed" scroll, and was curious after reading JK Rowling's comment that this book was one of her favorites, I really wanted to read this book. I have to say that her comment calling this book "scary and romantic in parts and had a feisty heroine" was spot on. It wasn't until I received the book that I realized it was a tale from around 80 years ago, but a tale so charming that it would be very popular today as well.

Though the setting and language is a bit old fashioned, it wasn't difficult to lose myself in the story. The author created a setting so incredibly detailed that it leaves the reader with a definite pang of regret that the story is fiction and not someplace someone could actually visit. While there are supernatural elements included, they are no so farfetched that a reader would have to suspend belief in order to finish the story. Included with the supernatural aspect is a bit of religion, but like the supernatural it isn't so heavily written that the writer alienates anyone reading this book. Everything is so perfectly woven together that the story would have felt like something was missing if the author hadn't included parts from each.

The final outcome is full of twists and connections that most readers will be enjoyably surprised to not have figured out on their own. The end of the book wrapped things up nicely, but I did find myself wishing that this could have been an ongoing series like "Anne of Green Gables." I would have loved to have read more of the adventures of Maria and Robin and the rest of the characters in the story.

4.0 de 5 estrelas A blend of good and over-the-top 28 de julho de 2013
Por J. Zartman - Publicada na Amazon.com

I decided to read the book after watching The Secret of Moonacre, and the contrast between the two is interesting. I got bored with the descriptions of clothing and the ultra-perfect town, but then I checked the dates. Elizabeth Goudge, an Englishwoman, lived through WWI as a young woman and wrote this book during WWII. As an author, this helped me understand the over-the-top sweetness. If I had been in her shoes, I definitely would have taken mental vacations to a safe and beautiful place. I kept reading and enjoyed the second half more--I would have loved it as a girl. Ms. Goudge created a rather strange blend of Christianity and fantasy magic that one would never find in a modern book, but which, again, makes sense when seen in the light of the times and her upbringing as the daughter of a Professor of Theology.

5.0 de 5 estrelas delightful and lovely!! 2 de outubro de 2016

found a copy of this in my attic a few years ago, and ended up giving it to a girl I babysat over the summer, so I just had to buy myself a copy. this book is such a lovely gem! some might say it's too much, but I just adore all the loving detail and reading this book is like enjoying traditional afternoon tea in a spring garden in full bloom, complete with friends and easy cheerful conversation. thank you so much for this glimpse back into my childhood!
also, the movie partly based on this book, (and aptly renamed The Secret of Moonacre) is also a dreamy lovely thing! the plot has been altered somewhat, but it doesn't ruin anything, especially since they didn't take the original name of the book. why doesn't this happen anymore in modern cinema!! it would make everything so much easier, and help loving fans see it as a different version of their favorite characters and keep it separate from the book!
5.0 de 5 estrelas Loved the Movie. Love the Book. 24 de junho de 2017

After seeing the movie, "The Secret of Moonacre," I had to get the book, and I was not disappointed. My only complaint was the packaging. The first copy was ruined in the box, because it had no waterproof packaging. However, Amazon was quick to replace it for me, and there were zero problems the second time around.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Audio CD is Abridged 2 de maio de 2015

I first found the book in the library when I was 10, and was enchanted. I have bought this book for other girls, as I think it is a wonderful book, filled with adventure, whimsey, romance, and good writing. Juliet Stevenson is an excellent reader, and with that combination, I decided to spring for the audiobook. Nowhere on the site does it say that it is abridged, but it is. I avoid abridged books wherever I can, so when I got the CD (2 CD's) I was unpleasantly surprised. A classic like this should be read in full. I like the author's version so much better. That is why I took away one star, and for no other reason.
