Descrição do produto

If you’ve ever struggled with depression, take heart. Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all. In The Mindful Way through Depression, four uniquely qualified experts explain why our usual attempts to “think” our way out of a bad mood or just “snap out of it” lead us deeper into the downward spiral. Through insightful lessons drawn from both Eastern meditative traditions and cognitive therapy, they demonstrate how to sidestep the mental habits that lead to despair, including rumination and self-blame, so you can face life’s challenges with greater resilience. This enhanced e-book includes an audio program of guided meditations narrated by Jon Kabat-Zinn.

See also the authors' Mindful Way Workbook, which provides step-by-step guidance for building your mindfulness practice in 8 weeks. Plus, mental health professionals, see also the authors' bestselling therapy guide: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, Second Edition.

5.0 de 5 estrelas A bit of guidance. 14 de junho de 2016

I had been meditating for years and depressed for even longer, much, much longer, though I somehow did not realize. I got to a point where I was no longer able to meditate or be mindful as the brain fog, lack of sleep, the constant recursive thoughts, and anger had me spiraling down and down and down. I was lucky enough to get on some meds, get some sleep and take some time off to get to a more neutral state. Then I found this book. It was like the missing piece linking mindfulness - day to day, minute to minute mindfulness - and my mental and emotional state. It seems obvious in retrospect. Will I ever be OK, or even find some lasting happiness? I don't know. I do know that I never have to go down so far again.

This book will not solve your problems or cure your depression. It will however give you the guidance you may need to help yourself deal with the depression you feel and keep you from spiraling downward. It will take time, commitment and some patience with yourself. You have to be willing.

5.0 de 5 estrelas This book saved my life -- no exaggeration! 23 de julho de 2014

I purchased "The Mindful Way through Depression" a few years ago and now feel compelled to write a review so that others (and the authors) will know how very helpful this book was and is to me. I had never suffered depression until a few years back and had no idea why suddenly, when my life should be somewhat "carefree" ( I was retiring to a beautiful new community with my husband of nearly 50 years) I suddenly couldn't cope. I had spent years dealing with elderly parents' care, working full time in a career I loved, being active in my community, etc. etc.!! The "whys'" are not as important as the methods that the book provides showing you how to live in the present - accepting your own frailties, helping you to let go of the past and worrying about the future. The examples of people who were dealing with depression were extremely helpful, as well.

I have never taken medications - can't tolerate them -- lucky, I guess, because I knew I couldn't do down that road. I did try attending a self help group through our local hospital, but found that most of the people, while very nice and well meaning, were making a "career" out of being depressed. When they introduced themselves, they described themselves in relationship to their diagnosis. If I was depressed when I went in, believe me, I was really depressed at the thought that I would feel like that for the rest of my life.

I happened upon "The Mindful Way Through Depression" while reading an article in "O" magazine. My lucky day. I faithfully read the book and practiced the exercises over a period of many weeks and began to see the light at the end of the deep, dark , tunnel I had dug for myself. I felt very guilty about my depression -- I had no reason to feel as I did - or so I kept telling myself. The book allowed me to let go of my guilt and the overwhelming fear I felt. It was such a vicious cycle. THANK YOU TO THE AUTHORS. What a gift you are offering to those in need. I have recommended and purchased the book for several others and hope that they will benefit as much as I have.

5.0 de 5 estrelas It has been one epiphany after another 7 de outubro de 2015

I've suffered depression for sometime now and I've tried several treatments including antidepressants. I did improve sometimes but not quite. I was in a constant struggle. Actually I was basically at war with my own mind, trying to control my thoughts so i could avoid slipping through the bottomless pit of depression and hopelessness. It was extremely tiring, I became basically the police of my own brain. My mother told me all my life that I wasn't supposed to feel angry or sad or frustrated (she still tells me those things) but that doesn't work, at least not for me. Trust me , I've been trying for years but then I only get frustrated and angry at my self when I miserably fail at controlling my mind.
Then I came across this book. I originally thought it was going to help me control my thoughts and then I came to the revelation that I don't need to do that. What I had to do was realize that they are just thoughts! The fact that I THINK something doesn't make it real. That I can be aware of myself and then choose how to respond to any given situation, I don't have to respond in autopilot. I didn't know that was possible!
I've tried several meditation techniques but never mindfulness and it has helped me. It has been one epiphany after another.

I don't mean that I'm depression free but I don't feel so much burden. My thoughts are just that and when I realize that it automatically stops my rumination. I do feel much better. I highly recommend this book. The recordings are life savers as well. I love the fact that you can download them even if you buy the kindle version.

3.0 de 5 estrelas It's okay 14 de junho de 2014

I think that the thing about depression is that it's difficult to do these things and think these thoughts if you are really depressed. I like the intention behind the book, certainly, but living with depression inherently makes it difficult to actually read a book or take action so though in theory these ideas are really thought provoking and good, it's hard for a truly depressed person to implement.

You either get it, or you don't. I saw a one star review on here that said , " incredible! Apparently the way to get out of depression is to not think!"
That person... does not get it. This book clearly explains what depression sufferers (like myself) need to know - i.e.: how it happens and what to do about it.
If I have a car accident and I don't know how it happened odds are quite good but I'm going to have the same accident again! I will grant you it might take some deeper level of thinking or cognitive ability to understand the text, but if I could get it... and I'm no rocket scientist, you can.
I battled horrific bouts of depression for 15 years before I was recommended this book. It is the number one tool in my arsenal, and it will remain that way forever. Thank God for this book.
