Elisha wrote the words I chose for the title of this review to describe his early childhood, reminiscent of the well-water days some of us can recall before prevalence of TV/tech/automobiles. He played hide-and-seek in the absence of modern technology, walked almost everywhere he went, enjoyed food his mom "cooked with the ingredient of love," and everyone drank "from the same pot of cold water from a nearby river."
He suffered through childhood abuse. He watched some of his beloved siblings slowly die from illnesses. He saw his mother's broken heart when she buried stillborn infants. He became dangerously malnourished during a drought, and had to move far away to live with an uncle until the food shortage was over.
Elisha worked hard in his quest for education, and refused to give up many times when education looked impossible. He writes: "While other youths were wasting time at road junctions under trees talking to people passing by, I used my time to study and attend church.... Every morning we worked on the farms, planted new crops, harvested some...."
Oh and there were girls.... When that magical age comes that boys start noticing girls in a new way, what would life be without them?
Elisha taught as a volunteer in his former grade school while awaiting test results for his Kenya Certificate Secondary Education, and later he was offered a position under a paid contract as a high school teacher. Read the book to learn the rest, including his life in the U.S. now.
Looking back over his life thus far, Elisha writes "I will always believe in the power within me and the promise from God that he won't let me lose."
The grammar of this book is not perfect but, for someone whose native tongue is not English, Elisha has excellent mastery of the English language. The book is a delight to read.
Disclaimer: I was provided a paid Kindle copy of this book to download and was asked to provide a review, but the review is my own opinion of the book.
