We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?

Nineteen year old Megan Smith has spent the past year working in a small town diner in the middle of nowhere. Life is quiet, simple, safe. Then comes the news that her look-a-like has gone missing.

Claire.

Still damaged both physically and mentally, Megan's not looking to be noticed. Wherever she goes from here, it's a road she needs to take alone. But when Nickolas Ellis takes the job as the new nightshift cook, it scares her how easily her defenses crumble down, down, down for him. But there are secrets she can't bear to share with just anyone, unspeakable acts that continue to haunt, and when the similarities of Claire’s abduction couples with the fear of an unwanted visitor in town, the urge to run before it all happens again intensifies, threatening the only happiness Megan's ever found.

MAYOR SPOILER ALERT

wow this book leaves my mind nearly broken. By reading the summary I wouldn't have thought this was going to happen. I thought this would be one of these simple love story's where a girl meets a boy and after denying the attraction between them she caves in. And then something wil happen and they break up but work it out and they get back together and be happy.
But no that's not whats happening here. This is a story about a girl that was kidnapped, brainwashed, raped, tortured physically and mentally and had to burn herself out to get away. Lately she burned herself out of the house nearly melting her skin off. One of her captures died that night but there is another one. Since then she is on the run. Always keeping her head down and staying under the radar. She works in a little restaurant and there she meets the handsome night cook and she starts to let him in her broken heart. I really felt her pain when she told nick about her past and told him in a whisper "I'm broken".
But this boy (nick) knows a secret about her past. It turns out he is her boyfriend, and the girl that left a poster for her missing sister, is actually her. It turns out that her captures brainwashed her so bad that she can't remember anything anymore before she got captured. When things finally seems to get more normal again and she feels like she can heal and breath again. She gets captured again by the the brother of her first capture. While the first capture keeps her drugged while he rapes her, this one does not. He plays mental games with her, and she has to be willing
to have seks with him because if she don't he will hurt the other girl that he keeps and let her watch or make her do it. And when she still doesn't cave in, he threatens to sell her to people even worse than him. Not willing to be sold, she caves in at the last minute. After three days she get rescued, before her taker escapes,he says to her "I wil bring you home again".
Seconds before he kidnapped her, he shot her boyfriend nick.
After being returned home she and nick try to get their relationship to back to where it was.

This was a very emotional story about megan (clair)and nick .
I was very touched about the love nick has for her and how much he has done for and how much he is willing to do for her.
This is one of the few times when I didn't swoon over the main male character but just wanted him to be there for her. Oke I have to be honest he did have me swoon over him in the beginning but after I learned megans secret I kinda focused on her. And that doesn't happen to me often.
I still feel a little bit shocked about her secret. Shocked by the knowledge that this happens to many women in real live.
I really hope there is a second book because I just want to know if she wil be oke and that she and nick will work it out. I just want to read more about there story and I hate that I am without internet right now so I cant look it up or beg for it.
This is definitely a story that lives in my mind now and I think that this story wil stay with me. And not to many storys do.
I cant stop thinking about it,I really love megan and I want an nick for myself. I really really really want them to be happy and I want her to be save and I really really hope that her second capture zander dies a painfully death.

Amazing, disturbing, heartbreaking, yet hopeful...all words to describe this book! Nearly Broken deals with a subject that's difficult to wrap my brain around. It discusses the horrors suffered by the victims of abduction and their families. And it does so through a well written story woven around a true survivor!

Megan Smith is a survivor. She's brave, strong, resilient. The one thing about her that was her saving grace and her downfall is her spirit. She refused to be broken. I'm rather in awe. I know she didn't escape her experience without damage but she escaped. And it was awe inspiring.

The emotional suffering Claire's family has endured since she went missing is unfathomable. Her sister, Thea, has worked tirelessly to keep Claire's abduction relevant. Thea has suffered more acutely because of a secret she's been carrying since the day Claire went missing. Claire's family has never given up hope that she'd be found. This love and support is something Megan sorely missed.

And Nick...well, I can't say a whole lot about Nick without being spoiler-y. He does evoke a lot of feelings from Megan. Feelings that scare Megan since she's worked so hard to be as invisible as possible. The intensity between Nick and Megan is powerful. He wants to be Megan's rock. He wants to protect Megan and save her from her demons. But Nick has demons of his own.

One issue I had initially with Nearly Broken is that fact Megan seems so normal after her abduction experience. I didn't believe that time healed all wounds. And Megan had wounds, both physical and mental. I'm not saying she was 'normal' normal. But I was surprised by her ability to interact with humans at all. Then came the last quarter of this story and I understood. It became clear to me that Megan wasn't healed - she was functional. I think Megan's most defining characteristic is her unbreakable spirit.

It's hard to say everything I want to say about Nearly Broken without giving away pieces of the story. And that would be a travesty. Ms. Ashley kept me guessing, biting my nails, and sweating as my adrenaline was pumping like crazy. I felt like I'd been through the wringer when I was done. I think the writing is excellent and the story was well paced. Ms. Ashley created lots of suspense and evoked tons of emotion. And this is just the first book in this series. The next book can't be released soon enough.

I knew this wasn't going to be an easy read for me simply because of the subject matter. Reading about kidnapping, rape and sex trafficking is rather sickening. But weaved into these horrible things is also a story about strength, survival, courage and love. I thought the heroine, Megan, was such a strong person and the hero, Nick, was compassionate.

Megan has done what she has had to do to survive the unthinkable. She is trying to survive each day coping with her past as best she can. She has had to start a new life. She works as a waitress in a quiet town and has made a few friends who have helped her start over again. Who has given her a chance to belong and feel like she has a family. But one day things begin to change. Megan meets Nick who was hired to be the new cook. It wasn't instant but slowly the two of them become close and as Megan lets Nick into her new life, this is when we get our first twist in this story.

Things start to unfold and we find out what happened to Megan/Claire. It is incredibly heartbreaking and painful to read. But there is a constant thread of hope for her. Hope for happiness, hope for a normal life hope for that forever love. And Nick is the one who gives her the hope. Nick and Megan together was wonderful yet fragile. How he showed her how much he loved her just filled my heart. He was patient and gentle. When they reconnected on a physical level, reading about it gave me shivers. It was just so special.

Megan goes through a lot. When you learn of what had happened to her and how she tries to reconnect with her old life, things are not always easy. She has a lot of emotional trauma she is having a difficult time with as well as the physical trauma. Her journey is not an easy one. Then just when I was starting to think she was going to make it, BAM!

There was a twist in that story that had me saying WTF. From then on I couldn't stop until I finished the book. I had to know what was going to happen. The last part of this book difficult for me to read. And if I am to be honest, I found that I had to skim things a bit once or twice. Not because the writing was bad but for me personal some of the things that happened became hard for me to read through.

But I will say the Epilogue was perfect. As I turned each page slowly, one by one, the fingers of the hand that was squeezing my heart was releasing

Clair Whitaker had a loving family and a boyfriend who was going ahead to further his career. She was only 17 when she was kidnapped. Her family looked everywhere for her, never gave up. One day her sister came into the dinner that Megan Smith worked at. Megan is identical to the picture of Clair that Clair's sister shows her. Is this a coincidence? Or is there something really out there that can explain this?

Megan has a troubled past. She has burn marks all up her arms from where she was almost caught in a building on fire. To say she has skeletons in a closet is the least for her.

Nick is the new cook at the restaurant. He's making the food more delicious and the atmosphere more pleasurable. Nick and Megan have an easy connection from the beginning. Nick takes things slowly with her. He's always looking out for her. When something is reveled, their relationship is put to the test. It is a struggle for both of them.

This is a heart wrenching story about a girl who gets kidnapped at seventeen. It broke my heart from all the trauma, trials and tribulations that this one girl had to go through in her life. This book is not for the fair hearted. This book deals with serious issues as rape and human trafficking. I gave this book 5 stars and if I could, I would have given it more!

I really enjoyed this dark romance which is my first read by Ms. Devon Ashley. This is definitely not your sappy romance novel. Dark, gritty and even difficult to read at times, this story deals with rape, human trafficking and the attempts of one woman to reclaim her life after she escapes from hell.

Even though there is a lot of tough subject matter, I found the difficult scenes to be tastefully written and not over the top. Our heroine, Megan, is a tough cookie and you'll be rooting for her throughout the book. Nick is a great hero and once we find out his real identity and connections to Megan, he gets even swoonier (is that a word?).

I really don't want to give away anything in the storyline but basically Nick moves to a small town and meets Megan, who is waitressing while trying to maintain a low profile and stay hidden for the man she thinks might be looking to kill her. Nick knows she is in some kind of trouble and goes about trying to win her heart while also protecting her.

There are more than a few twists and turns and the book gets pretty suspenseful which is a great departure from a lot of what I've been reading lately. The writing is done well, the character development is good and I really don't have a lot of criticism for the book. I do think that towards the end, things maybe got a little repetitive but I'm eager to read book two as you can tell there will be more drama to come. There isn't a cliffhanger though so you're safe!
