Touches of sci-fi and action/adventure allow the reader to travel with Easton as he first moves through his daily life on Earth, a lowly former Marine trying to make ends meet, and becomes a space faring citizen enroute to Nefertem and finally, something else entirely. The journey pits his humanity against his training as he is forced to make decisions that may alter his future while also finding that perhaps he has no control over his fate at all.
The characters, Easton Miller and the many supporting cast, are well conceived and easily recognizable. A.L. White does an excellent job personifying each character, leading the reader to believe that these players are not merely figments of his vast imagination but instead people he has met in his own travels. The gristle and depth of each personality bears out in their dialogue as well as their actions.
The story is well written and flows very well. A.L. White’s lack of scene setting description and standard author “fluff” may not suit every reader, but I for one appreciate the honesty in his writing and not spending page after page trying to increase his word count. He is direct and allows the reader to explore their own mind to build Nefertem around a cast of their own choosing.
A.L. White has chosen to write a story that is not simply dystopic, action, adventure or sci-fi and instead is creating a world encompassing all genres and has provided his audience with a perfect canvas to explore their minds while he places building blocks in their path. On Earth I imagined flooded streets and constant rain similar to Rutger Hauer’s Split Second, space exploration akin to Star Trek, a vast forested planet similar to Pandora and the beautiful white city of Minas Tirith from The Lord of the Rings. I truly appreciate an author that allows me to help when travelling through my mind.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment of the Nefertem series and look forward to much more from A.L. White.
I picked up the book two nights ago at 10pm and before I knew it, it was 2am and my eyes were struggling to stay open but I had read 80% of the book by that point and didnt want to put it down, it had everything you could possibly want, action, suspense, and human emotion at discovering a new planet.
The creatures and inhabitants of Neferatum were well described, the human characterss had flaws, and werent perfect, but that makes us human.
I cant wait until I read the next segment in this story and if you want to read a good book that doesnt take much brain power to follow so that you can just enjoy what you are reading then this is for you.
Well done AL White, as you know I had my misgivings but those disappeared by page 2
W.J. Watt, author of the Highland Hunger series
Nefertem: The Awakening takes place after the destruction of what we know as earth. This introduction to the dystopian novel series starts with a now civilianized Marine, Easton Miller in a crappy job. Wanting a better life, he jumps at the chance to improve his circumstances by taking a job on Nefertem.
Although he is nervous about the new adventure, Easton is excited to see things he has never seen and make new acquaintances. After running into an old friend, things start to change for Easton and his circumstances become life or death for his and the newly met friends. It is then, that he falls back into what he knows as a Marine only to find, that life is not what is in store for him.
A.L. White continues his path of improving the building of main characters in his books as well as painting a picture of what we are to visually see. His writing style of “no fluff” is something that draws me in to every story he has written and I hope he never ceases to do so.
Constant action from cover to cover brings the reader in and never leaves them hanging. With twists and turns on every page it is somewhat difficult to “see it coming”. Without spoiling the ending, there is enough of a tag to lead you to the next book in the series, but not enough to give it away. You will want to move straight to the next book once you have finished “The Awakening”.
I personally cannot wait for Mr. White to finish the follow-on book in the series.
Great job sir!
