Sobre o Autor

I've always written, as far back as I can recall anyway. Until 2011, that writing was just for me, or as rambling letters to friends, and travelogues to family. I never thought about why, or if others did similarly, and the thought of publishing never entered my head. Since I left England in 1979, I've travelled widely, collecting experiences, people, and places as I did so. From the blood-soaked streets of Kampala, the polluted dust bowls of the Sahara, or the pristine ice floes of the Antarctic, I gathered and filed them away. Some have recently squeezed through the bars of insecurity and are now at large in the pages of my first three novels. Others await their future fates. Although I grew up in Norfolk, UK, I never felt truly at home until I lived in Australia, and that is no doubt the reason my first published novels are set there. All of my books so far have some element of fact in them. I guess it's hard for any writer not to include events from their life. Our experiences shape our thoughts and the words and actions of our characters.I sometimes wish I'd become a novelist earlier in life, but then if I had, I wouldn't have the range of characters and events that I do. After spending much of my adult life travelling, I now live in a remote forest house in Germany with two Mexican dogs, an Icelandic horse, six French hens, and a mermaid who I found at a beach on the north coast of Bequia. My writing ritual. It depends on what stage I'm at, and what the scenes or chapter are like. If I need to get into character, I'll sometimes watch part of a movie that'll help take me there. Or sit in the dark and listen to the proceeding chapter, visualising the characters movements and moods. I write in the boiler room, which is in the cellar-what my family call the KGB room. It kinda looks like that. It's sparse and hard, how I'd like to keep my writing. It has lots of pipes, valves and pressure gauges, and the faint smell of fuel oil. There's a single overhead light in a wire cage, and on the table, an ancient desklamp that spills a yellow glow behind the monitor. Some of my favourite books: Quiet - Susan Cain Franky Furboy - William Wharton Seven Pillars of Wisdom - T.E Lawrence The Power of One - Bryce Courtenay Sailing Alone Around the World - Joshua Slocum, and there are so many more. Each of these books has stayed with me, and in some way changed my life. None of them directly influences what I write, but all of them have influenced who I am.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Review Heather 1 de agosto de 2015

I really enjoyed Heather by Alan Sendal. It was fast moving well researched and really gripping. The odd typo did not however diminish the overall experience for me. Quite a way from my usual style of a read but it was really great. Didn't want to put it down!!

Shadow House is a page-turning thrill ride. The characters are fully fleshed and relatable to some extent. (I can't say I've ever been involved with the underworld in Australia, so not fully relatable.) Good action with a nice mix of romance without hardcore sex portrayed. I could have done without the f-word every other sentence, but I suppose that's the nature of the beast. The ending was a little bit of a disappointment as far as the main characters' involvement. It felt slightly anti-climatic, but overall a winner.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Characters are well-portrayed and relate-able to many; story has a near-perfect balance of dialogue and narrative description. 10 de setembro de 2014

Overall, this is a pretty good read!
The main characters - Sam and Heather - are effectively portrayed as people who have been for the most part in control of their lives and then find themselves in unfamiliar territory. That makes them a lot like you and me, every new decade of our lives. They're relate-able to many of us even though their current circumstances (hopefully!) are not.
Also, the story moves along at a good pace, with a near-perfect balance of dialogue and narrative description.
Overall, this is a pretty good read!

REVIEWED by Danika Jayde of The Reader's Hollow blog:

This was an interesting read for me, though at times I found there was an almost staccato flow that made the reading at times a bit broken. There were paragraph breaks when changing the view to know that it was from a different character viewpoint which was great, but then other times there were breaks simply to show a short space in time had passed. Because of this there were spaces in paragraphs where I personally thought were a break for a change of scene or view, but in actuality only a short space in time. It was because of these multiple reasons behind these breaks that made things to me seem a bit choppy. In my mind the story would have flowed better with a simple sentence to connect the two that were time change and not view change. That being said I did enjoy the idea and story.

I enjoyed the mystery behind the character of Sam in the beginning, and the candidness of Heather, as well I think that the development of the characters in general was well done. The fact that I had a personal dislike for McCutchen early on simply by description I believe was a great job and the back story to Loretto Reed to help build his persona was a marvelous decision. There is but one thing that I wish would have been added, and that is near the ending when Divinski is again playing a part in the story it was so long since I had read his name that I had forgotten he was an associate of Sam’s in the beginning; my thought is that maybe a link to remind readers of that relationship between the pair in some way would have been helpful since there are quite a few different characters.

Now as for story while I did enjoy it I think that it would have gotten a higher rating from me if there had been more parts that were of Sam, or even Heather, doing infiltration or descriptions of actual jobs. What it seemed like to me is that most of the time the story was of just Sam hanging out in strip clubs and sleeping with strippers to get information or to get closer to the goal. It did make sense to get him into the world in the first place and to keep up the façade, but to have more situations like the one with the shootout along with that would have kept my interest more and kept me more invested in the story. It just made the book stay at a moderate level instead of taking me on a ride of climatic outcomes and anticipation. I did however greatly enjoy the ending and how things played out, especially with Mitchell (I’ll keep that limited as to not create a spoiler).

So all in all, I did enjoy the book. In my opinion if you enjoy the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child, give this one a try.
5.0 de 5 estrelas A smooth sail from the vicious Sydney underworld to the balmy Caribbean... 27 de julho de 2015

I have just finished reading this novel and am still having moments when I think I am still sailing the Caribbean with Heather and Sam! Both these main characters are very well drawn, and invite you to share their declaration of war against the Sydney underworld. This is not my usual genre , but once I had entered into Sydney's steamy gangster ridden world I was hooked, and had to follow. All the characters are believable, but there are so many really horrific personalities on show here, I wished that just once or twice we could have met someone who was at least normal, if not actually kind! That is the only slight reservation I have about this book, and I loved the way that Heather and Sam gradually shed their previous personas to develop into the kind of people they really always were, wanting to lead the life which is possible if you really go for it.

The story line was believable and quite exciting, and the way Sam managed to achieve his objectives without the usual violence and bloodletting was very well imagined and written, as were the passages which described the development of Sam and Heather's relationship. I shall look forward to reading more by A.J.Sendall
