We don't have a "shadow party" we have a "shadow political system" of which the organization that produced it is part of the problem.
The book starts with an assertion that Colorado was mysteriously captured by Democrats...really...how about this, the demographics of the state changed substantially...there was NO "miracle" in Colorado, a bunch of people moved there and that swung the state. The conspiracyesque tone of the book is pandering to paranoids. What in this book is called "Shadow Government" and what in other books has been called "Dark Money". The least bias of these books seems to be Kenneth P. Vogel's "Big Money" which explores the issue for both large US parties. These non-profit political organizations shouldn't exist, but if we have a grain of intellectual honesty it's clear that they exist for both sides of the political spectrum and are sponsored by people with wealth most of us can't imagine happening.
The fact that these rich folks get to spend their pre-tax dollars on politics in a way that's not available to regular folks...that's something to get mad about.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center (who paid to produce this...it wasn't a journalistic piece like Vogel's "Big Money") was paid for by the John M. Olin Foundation (a non-profit conservative thinktank funded by chemist/munitions founder John M. Olin, $370 Million in funding), the Bradley Foundation ($800 million dollars in conservative grant), and the Scaife foundation (It concentrates its efforts towards politically conservative causes focused on public policy at a national and international level. From 1985 to 2003 the organization awarded over $235 million to other organizations.)
The organizations that founded the David Horowitz Freedom Center dwarf all the organizations George Soros has started (put together).
This *smells* bad to me because it reeks of hypocrisy (and I've seen better research work done for a Quora answer).
