Full disclosure: I found this book because someone posted a Tweet about the 1-star review that complained about lesbians in the story.

Additional disclosure: I'm not a lesbian.

When someone whose opinion about good story Tweeted that the first reviewer of this book had given it a 1-star review because Lesbians... well, I admit it: I'm a contrarian. I also love well-written fantasy regardless of the romantic pairings a story contains. So I took my friend's opinion as the correct one, and I purchased Book One in this series.

Here's what I have to say after reading Book Three: I really effing hope there are more books in this series.

Somehow the author manages to sell me one-hundred-percent on the enemies-to-lovers trope, which is one that I enjoy and yet question all the time. Somehow the author manages to convince me that both parties in this romance trope are acting for reasons I can totally get behind. Somehow the author manages to show me that both parties in this romance are entirely sympathetic characters, and to convince me of that because of their backstory.

I'm not gonna lie: I sobbed through all three of the books in this series so far. I'm also not gonna spoil: I won't tell you WHY I sobbed or at what POINT I sobbed. But it happened. Trust me.

I'm always a sucker for a good dragon story. And while I grew up on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Hero and The Crown by Robin McKinley (aka two books that set up dragons as the bad guys in the story), I also have to admit that Smaug was my favorite character in The Hobbit. I never entirely believed that dragons could be the bad guys.

So I LOVE the idea of turning the dragon-as-enemy trope on its head. I love the enemies-to-friends trope being written well. I love the childhood-friends-turned-enemies-turned-lovers trope done as well as this author does.

I don't know what else to say except that the world-building is precise, the character-building exquisite, and the storytelling perfection. Read these books. You won't regret it.

Great for fans of EMBER IN THE ASHES, the GRACELING series, and THE QUEEN'S THIEF series. This is a trilogy of companion books, where each book in the series, while chronologically picking up the story from the prior book, focuses on a new character (along with a new romance, including a f/f romance in the final book). This is a rather lovely format in that it there is a satisfying balance of conclusion at the end of each book and continuation of certain threads through the series as a whole. Also, unlike most series, where there is usually that one "weak link,” I found all three books to be equally strong. I can't pick either a favorite or least favorite; I love them all equally.

One of my favorite aspects of Ciccarelli's writing and storytelling is her incorporation of original lore/mythology. She weaves this storytelling in between chapters along with references to backstory in little slow-reveal snippets throughout each book. While I love her writing throughout the series, this portion is especially lovely and adds a unique depth to her characters and world-building as well as a dark mystery to the entire vibe of the series.

I could not race through these books fast enough, and yet now I'm so sorry for it to be over—definitely re-read worthy!
