Descrição do produto

A blueprint for thriving in your job and building a career by applying the lessons of Silicon Valley’s most innovative entrepreneurs.
LinkedIn cofounder and chairman Reid Hoffman and author Ben Casnocha show how to accelerate your career in today’s competitive world. The key is to manage your career as if it were a start-up business: a living, breathing, growing start-up of you.
Why? Start-ups--and the entrepreneurs who run them--are nimble. They invest in themselves. They build their professional networks. They take intelligent risks. They make uncertainty and volatility work to their advantage.
These are the very same skills professionals need to get ahead today.
This book isn’t about cover letters or resumes. Instead, you will learn the best practices of Silicon Valley start-ups, and how to apply these entrepreneurial strategies to your career. Whether you work for a giant multinational corporation, a small local business, or launching your own venture, you need to know how to:
* Adapt your career plans as you change, the people around you change, and industries change.
* Develop a competitive advantage to win the best jobs and opportunities.
* Strengthen your professional network by building powerful alliances and maintaining a diverse mix of relationships. * Find the unique breakout opportunities that massively accelerate career growth.
* Take proactive risks to become more resilient to industry tsunamis.
* Tap your network for information and intelligence that help you make smarter decisions.
A revolutionary new guide to thriving in today's fractured world of work, the strategies in this book will help you survive and thrive and achieve your boldest professional ambitions. The Start-Up of You empowers you to become the CEO of your career and take control of your future.

‘Jobs for life’ are a thing of the past.

In this age of cutbacks and austerity, no one is guaranteed a smooth career progression.

So what can we do to make sure we’re not left behind?

The answer, according to Reid Hoffman, co-founder and chairman of LinkedIn, is to think and act like an entrepreneur: run ‘the start-up of you’. Be nimble, self-reliant, innovative, network effectively and stand out from the crowd. And in this inspirational and practical book, Reid Hoffman and author Ben Casnocha show you how.

5.0 de 5 estrelas A book to ignite the entrepreneur within you! 28 de fevereiro de 2012
Por Jack Spain - Publicada na Amazon.com

"The Start-up of You" by Reid Hoffman (co-founder of LinkedIn) and Ben Casnocha is an excellent book to motivate and inspire you to take charge and accountability of your professional career. The authors intertwine interesting historical references and extensive personal experiences to provide a roadmap to transforming your career.

The book begins with a reality check and reminder that the former paradigms we may have had of the "American Dream" and "traditional career" assumptions have been gradually shattered over the past several decades. The old adage about "ready, aim, fire" has been supplanted with "aim, fire, aim, fire, aim, fire, ..." to survive and sustain our professional careers. The authors state their case that we should define our "assets", "aspirations and values", and the "market realities" of the world we live in to identify your specific competitive advantage as you formulate your professional career.

Reid and Ben also provide dozens of illustrations throughout the book on why so many entrepreneurial businesses launched in the Silicon Valley in California have been success. The professional networking that occurs in that region is likely unsurpassed in any business community throughout the world.

I would recommend "The Start-up of You" to anyone who is at a crossroads in their professional career or any professional who is looking to unleash their entrepreneurial spirit that has been squelched and smothered inside you for far too long.

Disclosure: I was an early adopter and continue to be a fan of the professional networking site, LinkedIn. I found this platform to be an essential professional networking tool in the various businesses I have run over the past decade.

5.0 de 5 estrelas Gave me anew perspective on LinkedIn and careers in a changed employment environment. 22 de novembro de 2015

I learned of this book from a mention in another book: "The Rise of the Plutocrats and the Fall of the Rest of Us" which I read as a follow on to Thomas Pickety's "Capital in the Twenty First Century. It will be helpful to anyone wanting help in navigating a changing employment/career landscape or contemplating a business startup. It is especially helpful in career related networking. One author, Reed Hoffman, was a founder of LinkedIn. The book's chapter end exercis should be really useful in helping to build new skills in career development and networking. It has engaged me in thinking about and rethinking my own career. Also, I will give a copy to each of our five daughters; two recently graduated BS and MFA and one about to graduate and two entrepreneurial homemakers.

I like the book for couple of reasons:
- Gives good tips to professionals as to how they can "advertise" themselves similar to any corporation to improve their professional career
- Written in more of a step by step guide which makes applying the principals easy.

I have seen benefits of applying principals from this book in the past few months.

Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of Ried Hoffman and have listened to most of his publically available material on the web.

5.0 de 5 estrelas IF YOU FAIL TO ADAPT; NO ONE IS GOING TO CATCH YOU WHEN YOU FALL 2 de setembro de 2014
Por Ivory Dorsey - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: Capa dura Compra verificada
If this book does not wake the weary from slumber, I don't know what will. It is designed to shape the thinking of those engaged in what has shaped up to be a race in the workplace without a finish line. The prevailing quote is this:"IF YOU FAIL TO ADAPT; NO ONE IS GOING TO CATCH YOU WHEN YOU FALL
“The labor market in which we all work has been permanently altered. Forget what you thought you knew about the world of work. The rules have changed. “Ready aim, fire” has been replaced by “Aim, fire, aim, fire, aim, fire.” With change, come new opportunities as well as challenges. What is required is a new entrepreneurial mind-set…if you want to seize the new opportunities and meet the challenges of today’ fractured career landscape, you need to think and act like you are running a startup: your career…The world is changing. The amount of time you spend at any one job is shrinking. This means you need to be adapting all of the time….If you fail to adapt, no one is going to catch you when you fall.”~~ Reid Hoffman & Ben Casnocha-

5.0 de 5 estrelas How to run your career like a startup 17 de novembro de 2013
Por Jeremey Donovan - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: Capa dura Compra verificada
While this book says the same thing as a million books on professional success and the same thing as another million books on entrepreneurship, I'm giving the combination 5-stars since it is a fun and useful read with a few new frameworks (such as Plan ABZ). Here is the gist of the book:

1. (Problem) The macro forces of globalization and technology means you can not rely on your employer for a lifetime of employment and learning.

2. (Solution) Given this new reality, you need to run your career like a startup runs its business.

3. (How) Here is how to act like a startup:
a. Never rest on your laurels or give up - hustle (but don't be a hustler) and persevere
b. Pay attention to your competition, striving to own a niche they cannot or do not serve
c. Have a permanent beta mindset: Pursue opportunities by taking intelligent and bold risk (have a Plan A that you specialize in, always be experimenting with Plan B to pivot if desirable with the knowledge that you can always fall back on the safe Plan Z)
d. Build a broad and deep network from which you can collect and synthesize information. Especially build relationships that expose you to different worlds. Share proactively.
e. Have well-planned, prioritized goals AND be flexible
f. Spend time on an ongoing basis figuring out what customers value and pay attention to WHY things are working or not working the world around you
g. Work in markets with natural momentum
h. Join or start groups of high-quality individuals with shared values
