THE STORY: Tiago is the Warload of the Wyr desmesne. The Wyrkind are one of the Elder Races that also include the Elves, the Light and Dark Fae, the Demonkind, and the Nightkind. The Elder Races live aside humans in the United States although they also have hidden realms. Tiago is an ancient Wry whose Wyr form is a the Thuderbird. He comes to Chicago to help Tricks, a Dark Faerie, who lived with the Wyr while her evil uncle was on the Dark Fae throne. Now, Tricks aka Thistle Periwinkle aka Niniane Lorelle is the heir to the Dark Fae throne. Someone is trying to kill her and Tiago has come to help protect her. The problem is that the two disagree as to what needs to be done. Niniane knows that once her identity was known that she would not be safe but that she cannot hide forever. Duty and desire conflict for both Niniane and Triago.
OPINION: STORM'S HEART is another well-plotted, engaging, fun and fresh fantasy romance. This book is a bit darker than the first book in the series, but the tone matches the intensity of the characters. The plot is engaging with intricate twists worthy of the political drama it depicts. The romance between Tiago and Niniane is also complicated and difficult. Even by the end of the story, their problems are not close to being solved. Tiago is a great hero: protective and dominant and yet willing to stand behind Niniane. The two fight tremendous battles with one another and that makes this book funny and sweet at the same time.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book does a better job than the first one in setting up the scope of the world of the Elder Races with a better explanation of the different races.
FINAL DECISION: While not as good as the first in the series, STORM'S HEART continues the fun, fresh reality/fantasy hybrid series. With a sweet romance and a good intense plot, this book is a satisfying read.
CONNECTED BOOKS: STORM'S HEART is the second book of the Elder Races series. It can be read as a standalone although this book continues the storyline from the first book and the characters are recurring.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.
There were also a few mistakes such as mixing up a clip with a magazine, a halter for a bridle, and if a stallion was really camping he would have spent the entire time yelling his head off for the mares. Camping with a stallion when there are other horses around usually sucks. And why did Tiago's partisan shift produce fangs if his Wyr form was a beaked Thunderbird?
That said, as in the last novel I enjoyed her nods to great movies. This one paid homage to The Wizard of Oz, The Incredibles, and The Lord of the Rings.
There was also some funny dialogue and since the main problem facing them (lack of acceptance of any Wyr or part Wyr heirs) has not been resolved, a bit of a cliff hanger.
I am more looking forward to books 3 & 4.
