Descrições do Produto

Descrição do produto

In January of 2010, a wide-eyed English grad went from peddling software in NYC to understudying the lead role in WICKED the musical -- her first professional theater gig (ever). UNNATURALLY GREEN is the humorous account of the entire journey, from her pit-stain-filled audition to the bittersweet closing night.

Author Felicia Ricci wears her heart on her sleeve as she tackles the role of Elphaba, WICKED's green-skinned heroine. She leaps countless hurdles, both professional and personal: conquering the "Songs of Death," weathering a trans-continental "Week I Didn't Poop," enduring the artistic limbo of understudying, and -- worst of all! -- meeting the man of her dreams. And all the while learning, time and again, what it means to be "green."

Hop into the mind of an over-sharer as she discovers Broadway's Man Behind the Curtain -- and the thrill and terror of personal growth.

Recommended ages: 14 through 99.

Sobre o Autor

Felicia Ricci received her B.A. in English from Yale University, where she won the J. Edward Meeker prize for nonfiction and the Louis Sudler Prize for the arts. She performed the role of Elphaba over 40 times, each time eating a banana precisely one hour before curtain.

Full disclosure: I have a child who works in professional musical theatre (production crew, not a performer) -- but my wife and I always always enjoy the bubbling life stories that she often shares with us. This book felt like one long rush of such stories.

Myself, I am an amateur singer in a large chorus, so I really enjoyed this book from my own (rather distant, relatively speaking) experience with the performance side.

Felicia writes in a wonderfully open, natural tone -- I've no doubt that this is reflected in her singing voice. Speaking of which, her series of vocal training videos she has out there are very uniquely her own and quite charming -- as well as very well done! Be sure to check them out if you liked the book.

I found the story very compelling. Detailed, and filled with a tapestry of minute but delightful details and emotional scenes that will tug at your heart and bolster your belief in the power of positive and honest determination, despite the absurdly intervening behaviour of the universe. I can't think of an artist or creative out there who won't appreciate this story from an inspirational point of view! (I've recommended it to several creative people I know immediately after -- no, WHILE I was reading it. It's that good!)

Myself, I can't wait for the movie version of this book. OR! Even better: the musical!

Please don't give up your writing career Felicia -- it's beautifully personal and somehow, very comforting. Looking forward to reading more in the future!

(And congratulations on your marriage Fel! May the universe never stop its crazy interventions for you!)

Green. Green narrator, green character, green story. That's it. That's the book.

Felicia would be proud. I understood her message.

In 2010, amateur musical theater actress Felicia Ricci, with no professional training whatsoever, was cast as a standby in the San Francisco company of the hit Broadway musical Wicked for the quirky, misunderstood, and yes, unnaturally green Elphaba Thropp. With a long line of frankly “unearthly” talented actresses previously sharing the role with Felicia, including the company's lead Elphaba, Eden Espinosa, Felicia had a huge title to live up to. Actresses such as Idina Menzel, who was the original Elphaba on Broadway in 2003, Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks, and Shoshana Bean had all set an almost impossible bar for any incoming green actress. (GREEN: not fully developed or perfected in growth or condition; unripe; not properly aged: a green actress.) Eden Espinosa especially was an almost goddess-like actress/singer to follow due to her ability to, as they say in the theater world, "belt her face." Talk about trying not to be a disappointment.

Still, Felicia had talent. All she had to do was believe in herself and try defying gravity.

A nonfiction book has never made me laugh as hard as I did reading Unnaturally Green. Not only is it jam-packed with comedy, Felicia Ricci explores a few life struggles that many readers can relate to. Of course, not many have the privilege of telling people that they were Elphaba, the one and only “Wicked Witch of the West,” on Broadway, but most know the feeling of not being good enough and the fear of failing. For those who know the musical Wicked, you're aware of how difficult playing the role of Elphaba is. Her songs are known as, "The Songs of Death," and if they're not sung correctly, the whole performance is like a live Britney Spears concert. Felicia hilariously describes her struggle to tackle "The Songs of Death" and deal with the people who tried to bring her down. A few other things that will make you an automatic fan are her hysterical descriptions of San Francisco denizens, her "Gentle Rambo" boyfriend whom she also often refers to as "Teenage Hercules," her Dating History Museum, and "greenifying" process.

Any reader, whether a Wicked fan, theater enthusiast, or not, will find every single page of Unnaturally Green laugh-out-loud funny. "Every single page" is just barely an exaggeration. Felicia's writing style is quirky, just like Elphaba, and up front, almost as if she's talking with you face-to-face like she's known you for years. One of my personal favorite quotes is, "As if by magic, the woman called Eden Espinosa was in our mortal midst. Forget the president- she was an Olympian goddess, greeting and walking among the Athenian citizens. That's right: Eden Espinosa. At board game night. Theater dorks everywhere were peeing their high-waisted tights" (Unnaturally Green pg. 140). Though some snippets may be a tad bit...personal (i.e. "The Week I Didn't Poop), even those parts will have you gasping for air and cheering for Felicia. Every chapter is a new misadventure or behind the scenes Wicked tale, and every one leading up to Felicia discovering what it means to be green.

I've been hearing amazing things about Felicia Ricci and UNNATURALLY GREEN for a long time. Although I kept meaning to buy the book, life got in the way, and I only ordered it on Amazon a few weeks ago. Finally, last night, I challenged myself to live tweet my thoughts while reading it, and I had fun responding to Felicia's thoughts through each tweet. Still, there is a limit of how much you can say in 140 characters, so I thought I would review it here, as well.

Unnaturally Green is Felicia's memoir of her experiences in the San Francisco production of WICKED (she is first the Elphaba understudy, but quickly gets promoted to standby). As WICKED is Felicia's first professional theatre gig, she is understandably very nervous-or "green," as Felicia would say. Through both humor and candidness, Felicia takes us backstage of her WICKED voyage and explores what it really means to be "green."

I was expecting the book to be good. I was already impressed with Felicia's writing from the excerpt on her website, but the book exceeded my wildest expectations. While as a WICKED fan and aspiring actor, it was great fun to go backstage and meet some of the actors in the SF cast, what made the book for me was Felicia's honesty. She doesn't shy away from anything she's feeling or thinking, and she truly captures the ups and downs of her experience. Her feelings are so relatable, and by the end of the book, I was marveling at how wonderfully human Felicia is.

I also both laughed and cried through the book. For me, that says it all.

Lately, I've been feeling rather "green" myself. I recently started posting my sequel to the musical version of WICKED on a website, and my website has required me to work with people much older than I am. It's been lots of fun, but it can be intimidating at times. I'm also not used to sharing my writing with the world in the way that I have been doing. Writing a story is very, very different from sharing it. I love what I am doing, but there are times when I'm seriously overwhelmed.

But when I read UNNATURALLY GREEN, I was able to forgive myself for the way I have been feeling. Like Felicia, I am a chronic perfectionist and am very hard on myself. Her experiences assured me that everyone doubts themselves at one time or another and that I am not alone.

In my opinion, you don't have to be a fan of WICKED or theatre to enjoy UNNATURALLY GREEN. This book is for anyone who has leapt into a new experience and stuck with it until the end.

I'm so glad that I read this book. I know I will be carrying Felicia's words with me for a long time.

I stumbled across this after getting a recommendation to read Kristin Chenoweth's Wicked memoir and I'm so glad I did! From the jump this was hysterically written, giving a real insight into the author's personality with complete authenticity. I'm a huge lover of musical theater, but not a performer, so the inside view on what happens in auditions and backstage was both entertaining and informative. To land Elphaba as a role, Felicia must be a incredible talented performer, but I hope she ditches theater to keep writing because she may be even more talented in that artistic genre. Can't wait to read her next book!

I read this book after meeting Felicia at a Wizard of Oz festival in Chittenango NY a few years ago. I went back to the hotel that night after meeting her and ordered it! (I immediately regretted not buying it directly from her when I met her!) It was such a wonderful book! Her writing is so fun and charming. I could not put it down and probably will read it again before long!
