Belle's (Louise) storyline isn't so much about a dark desire but more for a deeper desire of love and happiness. She's an easy character to get on with and makes you wish she had more page time. At first I didn't understand why Belle's story was entwined with Valentina's, but a little way through the book you have a clearer idea and everything falls into place. Learning about the way Valentina "likes" her relationship makes you aware of her issues, yet at the same time she wants more, making you want to turn the pages. When she becomes involved with erotic photography, she gets more than she bargained for; revealing darker desires she didn't know existed. To be pulled into a world she finds confusing with things she doesn't understand, makes you question the story at certain parts too.
The story is erotic in all the right ways without being overbearing and in the wrong places, which you can find in some books! It all falls into place without having too many erotic scenes in a chapter, which can sometimes spoil a story. A definite read for erotica fans.
Review by Stacey Vincent on behalf of BestChickLit.com
Simultaneously, Belle lives in the past, indulging in her every desire. The two collide and together are liberated.
This book was not was I was expecting. After reading the tragedy that was Fifty Shades of Grey, I was half expecting another pointless, emotionless, unromantic 'love' story gone wrong, with a parallel love story set in Venice many years before. How wrong I was. Valentina was poignant and emotional as she struggled to express her desires and yearnings, whilst controlling her photography job and unpredictable boyfriend, Theo. I loved her friends, who were as complicated and complex as herself, and her memories and thoughts about her mother gave a very Shirley MacLaine idea of bad mothering. Theo was barely mentioned, which added to his aloof qualities.
Simultaneously, Belle, living in Venice with a boring, aggressive husband, is also struggling against the constraints of her femininity. She finds an outlet for her pent up desires (several outlets) and by letting go, is freed.
This novel is basically about freedom. To be free emotionally and sexually, and to feel no guilt or embarrassment for our choices. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
