"I know that I'll be evaluated in Seattle with wins and losses, as that is the nature of my profession for the last thirty-five years. But our record will not be what motivates me. Years ago I was asked, 'Pete, which is better: winning or competing?' My response was instantaneous: 'Competing. . . because it lasts longer.'"

Pete Carroll is one of the most successful coaches in football today. As the head coach at USC, he brought the Trojans back to national prominence, amassing a 97-19 record over nine seasons. Now he shares the championship-winning philosophy that led USC to seven straight Pac-10 titles. This same mind-set and culture will shape his program as he returns to the NFL to coach the Seattle Seahawks.

Carroll developed his unique coaching style by trial and error over his career. He learned that you get better results by teaching instead of screaming, and by helping players grow as people, not just on the field. He learned that an upbeat, energetic atmosphere in the locker room can coexist with an unstoppable competitive drive. He learned why you should stop worrying about your opponents, why you should always act as if the whole world is watching, and many other contrarian insights.

Carroll shows us how the Win Forever philosophy really works, both in NCAA Division I competition and in the NFL. He reveals how his recruiting strategies, training routines, and game-day rituals preserve a team's culture year after year, during championship seasons and disappointing seasons alike.

Win Forever is about more than winning football games; it's about maximizing your potential in every aspect of your life. Carroll has taught business leaders facing tough challenges. He has helped troubled kids on the streets of Los Angeles through his foundation A Better LA. His words are true in any situation: "If you want to win forever, always compete."

From the Hardcover edition.

5.0 de 5 estrelas Really great book about institutional leadership 7 de junho de 2015
Por Pete O'Brien - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: eBook Kindle Compra verificada
If you're not a USC or Seahawks fan, I think it's very easy to see Pete Carroll as an antagonist. But as someone with little skin the game of college or pro football, I was intrigued by the success that he has enjoyed given the freedom that he allows his players to have. I probably view this dynamic quite simplistically, but this juxtaposition does seem counterintuitive to traditional coaching. I bought Win Forever to understand what Carroll is about... and I was pleasantly surprised to read about the thoughtfulness of his philosophy towards his players. To hear him name-drop Abraham Maslow was kind of cool, and to understand how deliberately he creates a learning environment is very interesting and unique. I think many people would be surprised to read how Carroll's philosophy developed and how successful he's been. Note that it seems that he wrote this the year after he transitioned to the Seahawks, so there's no Super Bowl insights or recap although there is mention of Marshawn Lynch's "Beast Mode" run.

A couple of negative aspects to this book: Number one, a cynic might see that this book was co-written and wonder how much of the philosophical nuggets are "introduced" into the story. As a certified cynic, this thought occurred to me a few times but I decided that I enjoy the story and the philosophy so much that I "buy in" (so to speak) to the story in its entirety. I also found it off-putting how many football people he mentions in the book - you may find yourself checking Wikipedia to find out who "Rocky Seto" is, only to find that there may not be a value to knowing that outside of the context of one or two sentences in this book. It's a very minor criticism, though.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about leadership, team-building, or of course football.

4.0 de 5 estrelas Secrets of Success from a Coach in the News 22 de janeiro de 2014
Por Old North State - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: Capa comum Compra verificada
The current success of the Seattle Seahawks will no doubt mean that this book will be widely read and it should be. It is interesting to learn Coach Carroll's philosophy and then to watch how he appears to apply his philosophy in his daily routine with his organization. Many members of the print and electronic media would do well to read this so that they won't ask so many of the same questions over and over, allowing them to get on to more interesting things. Sure, each reporter is trying to get his or her own personal quote from the Coach, but when six reporters at one news conference ask essentially the same question (which the Coach patiently answers the same way each time) their lack of background study is too obvious! The book reads like a talk, so it may be that it was dictated.

5.0 de 5 estrelas If you're into sports, you'll definitely love it. 3 de agosto de 2015

"The process of self-discovery that was necessary to formulate my vision, and the power of having a philosophy has given me a confidence I didn't have before. One of the keys to success lies in knowing and believing in yourself. When you are confident and you trust in who you are, you can perform to the best of your ability, and that is exactly what I plan to do. Whether you are coaching the USC Trojans or the Seattle Seahawks, working at your job or running a household, all you should ever strive for is to be the best you can be . . . and that is the essence of what it means to Win Forever." ~ Pete Carroll from Win Forever

Pete Carroll. Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Super inspiring guy.

Pete wrote this book after an incredibly successful decade coaching the USC Trojans and right before he started coaching the Seahawks--a team that had won 9 games in the 2 seasons before he showed up. He basically called his shot--quickly turning the team around and winning a Super Bowl after a few seasons. That's remarkable.

This book captures the essence of his philosophy: To Win Forever by Always Competing. It's an inspiring semi-autobiographical look at his journey in life and in football to craft the philosophy that now guides his success on and off the field.

If you're into sports, you'll definitely love it. Even if you're not, it's a great read packed with goodness.

I'm excited to share a handful of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. Coach Maslow - On the football field.
2. A Winning Philosophy - What's yours?
3. Oops. Fired Again. - But only 5 times.
4. Win Forever. - The philosophy arrives.
5. Practice Is Everything - Period.

2.0 de 5 estrelas AKA- The Pete Carroll Story 24 de fevereiro de 2014
Por Tony Zabukovec - Publicada na Amazon.com
Formato: Capa dura Compra verificada
This book was not quite what I was expecting from all I had heard about it. Rather than an insightful or inspirational book written to motivate people in athletics or life, I found it rather lacking in all these aspects. Carroll is very excited about his epiphanies gained from and rooted in various firings from coaching positions but the fire does not catch for the regular person like me. I am just not moved by his excitement. I'm sure in person it is a different experience. If I played for him in his system and maybe if he was there to drill the doctrine it may have a different outcome. The message is clear in the book as is the pathway to achieve it but it just lacks inspiration. I guess what Carroll writes strikes me as pretty obvious so maybe the book just isn't for me. I felt as though I were "listening" to an Amway salesperson who was so excited about these great new things which were really neither.

Look, I'm not really trying to trash the book. Like any book I'm sure it will serve to inspire someone. I bought it for $5.00 and read it pretty quickly. It was little investment in money or time. Maybe something in it will click and change someone's life.

Extremely engaging and an easy read. More importantly, it's inspired me by reminding me my early success in life was about being a competitor in everything I do, and ultimately that we're competing against ourselves. That a desire to want to be the best at everything you do is a great motivator. He goes on to the principles for implementing the 'Win Forever' philosophy. It has reenergized this older guy.

Obviously the principles initiated at USC did translate to the NFL with the dominating Super Bowl win (Go Hawks!). And I can really see it in the attitudes of the Seahawk's players. Fear is a success killer, negative thoughts are a success killer, but a feeling of being totally prepared can dispel fear and self doubt.

I'd tell my teenagers this is one of the most important books they should read for future success, but that would just mean they wouldn't read it. Perhaps I'll tell them they're forbidden from reading it.

That said, I would love for my wife to read it, but I am not sure someone who's not into football would be inspired. I will report back if I can convince her to read it.
