I really like that his work touches on such a wide variety of situations like dealing with the frustrations of a dead-end job, trying to lose weight/get in shape, staying persistent in the face of adversity, the ups and downs of romantic relationships, finding and staying true to your self as a person and your passions.
I have 11 of his posters in my classroom and sometimes I tell my students to go read a particular one when they're stuck on a problem or feeling frustrated or lost. They seem to enjoy them and take heart and that makes me glad.
This book and it's predecessor may not be the solution to all of your life's challenges (or maybe they are, lol!) but they'll certainly give you some inspiration to get a start or keep at whatever it is you need to do to get where you want to be.
Gavin, if you're reading this, "THANKS A MILLION!" XD
Gav's comics really appeal to me, because as a person who loves doing art, I can relate how the pressures of the professional and familial world can distract you doing something that gives you joy. This is ONE of the many themes that Gav chooses quotes from, and I know for sure that there is/will be a comic that will speak the truth for each individual person.
Also the art itself is pretty cool to look at... ;)
His comics are invigorating, optimistic, and remind the reader to pursue those things that are most valuable and precious in life. It would be reductive to simply say he hopes the reader will follow his or her dreams. It's closer to the mark to say that he believes and wants the reader to believe, that there is more possible than we may imagine. And rather than offer platitudes or any kind of self-help book. He shows us how every day, there are those willing to do the hard work of living well and earnestly.
