Emma Jean is not an ordinary girl. From a very young age, she knows that her greatest asset is her power to manipulate, deceive and create situations that are not real. And in another one of her schemes, ends up knowing Tristan. From this encounter between these two problematic teenagers, who live in foster homes, Tristan will end up owning a cat he did not even want and Emma will leave with Tristan's wallet.
Tristan, who thought himself so clever and mature, will be deceived by a little girl with crocodile tears. Incredulous to have been robbed and at the same time admired by Emma's daring, he will only resent the loss of his mother's picture, which was inside the wallet. But this casual encounter will mark the lives of these two irrevocably.
Emma comes in contact with Tristan by letters, apologizing for the robbery and telling that she has the picture. And so, they begin to correspond, starting a friendship. Emma stole a lot more than Tristan's wallet that afternoon, and Tristan may have been Emma's target, but he also ended up getting something from her. The two develop a bond, a friendship, and fall in love.
Until Emma's letters stop coming. Tristan will search for her for five years without any success. Until a turnaround that no one expected would put these two face to face. But after so many years, will it be possible to trust a person who apparently you used to know?
Perversion was far beyond what I expected. Emma and Tristan met in a completely unusual situation, even separated they became friends, they find each other again and they find themselves in a tense and dangerous moment. Emma was not happy in the house where she lived, the only consolation was Gabby and Mona, two sisters who also lived in the same place. The chance to go live with Gabby, who was located by her brother, is her hope of normalcy, of finally having a family. Big mistake. The arrangement, which has already started strange, with Mona not being claimed by her brother, but Gabby and Emma (who has no bond) shows that something is clearly wrong and upon arriving at the destination, Emma and Gabby will discover that the nightmare only started.
Tristan was adopted by a good couple, but a little different from usual. His new family treats him well, welcomes him promptly, and gradually he creates a bond with these people. Five years later, the reader discovers that the city where the two live is dominated by gangs, crime is high and government is about to intervene. The Bedlam, Immortals and Los Muertos control power. Tristan is now known as Grim, the executor of the Bedlam. Emma is a prisoner of Los Muertos. They live all this time in the same city. But they are from different gangs. And with this approach, the war is declared.
Emma and Tristan are good characters, well written, well developed, dubious, but despite all the violence that surrounds them, the reader can identify with and cheer for both. Emma did not have an easy life, all this time that she is in the power of Los Muertos, she lives in fear and being constantly threatened. Tristan is the only good memory she has, and she knows, the moment she finds Tristan and finds out who he is, that they can never be together.
Marco is completely crazy, bordering on sociopathy. His attitudes throughout the book are shocking. But nothing prepared me for the end of the book. What he does to Emma is monstrous. The book is heavy, contains plenty of graphic abuse scenes. The ending is shocking. I did not expect the revelation that was shown. I did not suspect that person in particular was evil, and I would never have guessed that it was all a plan. I was curious to know why, what secrets are hidden. It is a good book, well written, with strong themes but can generate empathy for the main couple.
