Incredibly disturbing. The expression is not solely related to the facts and the history itself, but because of the similarities it keeps to the days we live in, this XXI century.
Written in the 1950s, the book describes a future where people only care for immediate happiness and grow numb in front of a television screen. Books are forbidden and the firefighters (such as the main character) are supposed to search for books and burn them. To read and reflect over it is a terrible crime, as thinking is dangerous and people are supposed to be peaceful lambs, ready to be dominated and guided by the will of the government, ignoring their self existence and thoughts.
This is pretty much what we are seeing today, with people consuming silly and shallow entertainment, spending lots of their leisure time in front of the television, computers, reality shows, social networks etc. and not reading or reflecting about life itself.
