This book is the go to guide on colour correcting for good reason. Alexis Van Hurkman is thorough in his approach, meaning even the most clueless of newbies (such as myself) will become adept at colour correcting by the time they have finished reading the book and doing the exercises included with it. As an indie filmmaker, this book is a must, as a read and a download of the free Davinci Resolve will dramatically shrink your post production costs, as this book will equip you with the necessary skills to do your own correcting and grading. What is most valuable are the strategies that Van Hurkman outlines and walks you through, with an example, to practically deal with common issues you will find in the images you come to correct/grade. These are highly detailed and effective, and as such, it is a good idea to keep this book at arms length from your desk when working. I couldn't recommend this book more highly. It really is a one book wonder on the art of colour correction.
This is everything you need to know about colour grading and told in a linear easy to understand format that explains clearly the what and why of how to approach grading. I'd recommend being familiar with your software prior to reading this book to allow you to concentrate on the knowledge rather than being hindered by not knowing what the controls are he's referring too. But it isn't necessary, just preferential.
*The* comprehensive guide to colour correction. Alexis has written the go to book on this subject which provides a very good grounding in how to colour correct video film. The book also has training material which can be downloaded to practice what is preached. Highly recommended!
This is often referred to as the bible for professional colourists and students alike. It’s so full of information don’t expect to take it all in in a single read through, but keep it on hand to refer back to whilst you’re working.
Some of the chapters may feel a little dated when Hurkman refers to certain technologies but the information about colour theory and best practices is just as true today as it was when the book was released.
Highly recommend this book if you’re interested in furthering your understanding of the art of colour correction and grading.
Done a ton of video courses on colour mastering but this outclasses all of them. Possibly a bit dry but everything you need to know is here and it's produced to a lavish standard. Well worth the asking price in my opinion.
I'm only up to page 150 or so and despite a few printing issues and the odd typo it's a great book! I knew very little about grading and I'm steadily learning more and more each day. I've heard of this book being referred to as "The bible of colour correction" and they're not wrong!
There is a vast amount of information in this book. It has really helped me to improve the quality of my videos in terms of colour along with highlights, midtones, shadows and other post settings found in a range of software these days.
