I was in search of books to know more about prayer. I am encouraged and challenged and humbled to pray after reading this book. Thanks be to God for such a marvelous revelation of His word through Mr DL Moody.
While I was growing up I heard an oft-repeated phrase around our church: “I prayed it through.” I think this would resonate with the heart of Dwight Moody, as he clearly articulates this concept in his book “Prevailing Prayer.”
Quite simply, Moody defines prevailing prayer as prayer that “involves the whole of our being. It affects our minds because we are occupied with God; it affects our wills because we desire to be yielded to God; and it affects our emotions because we are consumed with a love for God.” But many people—even seasoned Christians—wold probably confess that praying like this is challenging. Moody would agree with this, which is why he has given us such a practical book.
Moody not only lays out for us what will increase the likelihood that we will prevail in prayer, but he also diagnoses some of the roadblocks to this kind of consuming prayer. Each chapter links with the other chapters to build a convincing case that every Christian can learn how to prevail in prayer.
Moody uses stories from the Bible, stories from his own life and ministry, quotes from other Christian thinkers, as well as common-sensical ideas to create a desire to pray in this powerful, sustained way.
Whether you are a brand new Christian or a “seasoned saint,” “Prevailing Prayer” will energize your prayer life!
First let me simply say that I love this inspirational book. it is one that uplifts my soul and allows me to understand the principles of prayer. granted most people would never admit they pray or would like to pray because of arrogance or pride, but being a man of faith, wanting to learn more about faith and how it operates, this book is incredibly there, the basic ideal put into place with the scriptural texts to back it up. If you have a desire to pray, want to learn to pray or wish to learn more about prayer this is the book. It all begins with a step of faith.
This book was written in the early 20th century (or possibly earlier) and its language is quaint and dated....but regardless of that, it held my interest and it encouraged my faith as well as gave me hope that the handful of prayer needs that are most on my heart, can STILL BE ANSWERED --despite the 30 years that God has tarried in answering them. There was tale after miraculous tale of God hearing the passionate cries of his children on behalf of their families and how God took and answered those prayers. And I think that this is key...the prayers must be passionate. Cold prayers are lifeless. "God, reawaken the fire in my heart for those i love and hear my prayers and answer them as you answered these prayers offered so long ago.
