This is just simply a superb live concert CD. Bruce Springsteen and company are at the top of their game here, and it would appear from listening that the entire backing group from the 'Seeger Sessions' were on tour for this one, else how would it have worked and turned out so good otherwise?
The quality and fullness of the sound from the entire backing band and singers pays dividends here. I really enjoyed the 'Seiger Sessions' studio release, and the performances here on the 'Live in Dublin' (where else, for this sort of music?!) are brimming with energy and enthusiasm ans studio quality. Everyone is at the top of their game here, and they're all clearly having a blast busting out these old fashioned folky sing along tunes. Bruce's vocals are slightly less polished here, but make no mistake, all the power and passion is delivered in every utterance of his singing, superbly complemented by the female backing singers. If anything, I prefer these marginally more raw performances to their studio counterparts, though there isn't much between them in terms of fidelity, it honestly sounds that good. However, I particularly prefer the live rearrangement of 'Further On (Up the Road)' on this live CD over the studio rendition. In summary this is just an all round fantastic concert and sound mixed CD. Well done Bruce Springsteen and Co. It's a unique and valuable addition to your musical oeurve!
I must confess that I have only recently discovered the way Springsteen's music progressed away from his classic, anthemic rock songs toward gentler stuff that I enjoy. (This probably comes under the heading of better late than never, but is nonetheless a joyous discovery.) As I had already found impressive video clips of "Live In Dublin" I decided to give the cd a try. I am delighted I did. This is Springsteen's ringmastering of the large Sessions Band into a wonderful, enthusiastic melange of genres that is a wonderful listen. Think Americana flavoured with New Orleans Jazz, Tex-Mex and Bluegrass with a generous dash of Gospel and Blues thrown into the mix. The songs are equally wide ranging from folk-standards to Springsteen's own with some clever, unexpected and inventive arrangements by the Boss who reveals a rare talent at this. Not only does one have excellent musicians at the top of their game but they all sound as if they are enjoying themselves immensely. (It must have been exhilarating to be part of a touring 19 strong band, a rarity which must have been astromically expensive to mount.) The sound is excellent, with great balance but enough rough edges to convey the tremendous energy of the concerts. I surprised myself by not only listening to the whole set right through but thoroughly enjoying it. Not typical Springsteen but an exciting, gutsy live set that I recommend.
Everything I wanted and more. I love 'The Sessions Band and Bruce Springsteen' and this CD delivers even more. Even though it repeats some tracks from other CDs they are 'live' and, as such, very individual and even unique. Listen to the way the band works together and builds the music - love it.
A Springsteen live in your front room type feel to this great double album..the arrangements are great except alas for "If I should fall behind".In its original form it's simplistic nature is its beauty whichwith remarkably touching lyrics blows me away...this version just seems to have lost its essence.Otherwise a great addition to any Springsteen fan's collection .
Although a lifelong Springsteen fan and vaguely remember catching this on the TV I bought this album for one song and have become hooked on the entire album. One of those albums that grow on you more each day until it becomes an addiction.
Springsteen live is almost always a good album. This is an exceptional one. An E-Street core of musicians and others who deliver a terrific set. If you buy hoping for ‘Born to Run’ type material it’s not.
